1. Can you sit with yourself? π
Not distract yourself, not improve yourself. Just sit.
What actually happens: when you stop input, your brain's default mode network gets loud for about 60-90 seconds.
That's the itch to check your phone, rehearse a conversation, plan dinner.
If you stay, activity shifts from narrative to interoception..you start feeling the body instead of the story.
Try it clean:
β’ Set a timer for 2 minutes. No music, no guidance.
β’ Sit upright, feet down, hands still.
β’ Notice one sensation: the pressure where you meet the chair, the temperature on your skin.
You don't have to like what comes up. You just have to not leave.
2. Can you deep breathe with awareness?
Depth without awareness is just hyperventilation. Awareness is what flips the switch.
The mechanism is vagal: a longer exhale signals the brainstem that you're safe, which drops heart rate and quiets the amygdala. You don't force calm, you give the body the data for calm.
One simple pattern that works without counting apps:
β’ In through the nose for 4, feel the ribs expand sideways
β’ Pause for 4, no clamp
β’ Out through the nose or mouth for 6, feel the shoulders drop
β’ Do that 4 times, and keep 90% of your attention on the feeling of air moving, not the count
If your mind wanders on breath two, perfect. That's the rep.
3. Can you slow down your thoughts?
You can't slow them by pushing. Thoughts speed up under pressure. You slow them by widening the space around them.
Instead of "stop thinking," try labeling:
β’ When a thought appears, silently name its category: planning, remembering, worrying, judging
β’ Then return to the breath or the sit for one cycle
Neuroscience calls this meta-awareness. Mystics called it the watcher. Either way, you're not fighting the river, you're stepping onto the bank.
Do that a few times and the thoughts don't disappear, they just lose their urgency. You start to see gaps β half a second at first β and that's where the "ascension" feeling actually lives. Not up, but spacious.
