Pruned our blackberries today. It’s important to know if you have a primocane or florocane blackberry. This also applies to raspberries.

Primocane - fruit one time in the fall, these plants need to be pruned completely back to the ground 6-8 inches of stem left.

Florocane - fruit in summer and fall, these plants need to have new growth kept (for summer fruit), and old growth that has flowered and fruited be cut down to the ground.

I am so thankful to be able to come out and work in the garden even when it’s cold and nasty. Today’s chore: top off the raised beds with compost.

I do this now so that I don’t have to worry about it in the spring. It covers the original soil, protecting it, and it feeds the bacteria and fungi to keep them active even through winter.

We woke up this morning to a surprise. And it wasn’t the surprise you want to receive. While we were eating dinner, many of you were eating the deal of a lifetime. Rewind a week ago. A week ago we were trialing several different codes for kicking off the holiday sale. To find the best deal, still while staying in business. We trialed one which was free shipping on all orders.

After running the math, we realized it would be financially impossible to offer free shipping on some of our largest items, and also our lower priced items. So we settled on 20% off which was (for a small business) a HUGE discount.

Fast forward to today, we got a message thanking us for the free shipping. I thought, “hmmm that seems odd. We didn’t offer free shipping.” So I look. And to my horror, the code was not only still active, but it was automatically applied… on top of giving everyone 20%.

I panicked. Realizing the magnitude of what just happened, 2,000 orders came through. We realized then and there that we could do one of two things. We can either not honor the codes and create a PR nightmare, Or we could honor them and hope that something good comes from it. Even if it means losing money.

So we will be honoring every. Single. Order. Even if yes, it means we lose money on a lot of the orders. I guess the silver lining to this whole thing, is the reason so much sold is because you love our products so much. Like Amis who ordered 9 bulk bags, or susanne who ordered 6 coco coir blocks. Or Charley who ordered 4 bulk bags, 2 coco coir blocks, and 6 bags of worm castings. You all took advantage of something, and I don’t blame you for doing it. I would too if there were the best gardening products around at once in a lifetime prices.
