Quick tip! Never start with as many strawberries as you think you’re going to need. Often times, I recommend three times less than what you actually will need because after the first year, you will have the right amount for free!

We got the rest of the farm! Idlewild is now 39 acres and will be home to over 200 varieties of rare tomatoes, 50 varieties of rare peppers, 4 near extinct squash varieties, 700 rare and endangered apple varieties, 30 heirloom peach varieties, 40 pear varieties, and so much more.

I can’t understate how much your support of our little seed shop has impacted our preservation efforts for these amazing varieties of fruits and vegetables. The farm will also be donating much of its produce to local food banks and homeless shelters for those less fortunate. Together, we are creating lasting change in our world, country, state, and community.

Ok… because our prices are incredible and we’re growing more popular, yes. Some stuff is sold out. But it’s always that way. First, we are always selling out of stuff and repacking. That has always happened. That also makes sure the seed is as fresh as possible. But second, literally out of 760 different seed varieties, only 92 are sold out. That means there is a ton left in stock. Try something new, it might just be your new favorite variety!

It is official. After many months of back and forth, we have finally settled on a name for the farm. It really found us while we were finding trees for the preservation orchard portion of the farm.

We found an old orchard with original trees more than 130 years old (which is a very very rare thing, the equivalent of you living to be 115 years old) - more information coming soon in video form. It led us on a mission to find the story on them. In our research we discovered an old plat map from 1897 which had the land that was planted with our trees. It was a waterfront community named Idlewild, and had a southern portion named Shadyside. The original owner had a 100 acre farm on the river and against all odds, 3 varieties of 8 trees remained, zero name ever given, and over 130 years later. Old, beaten, rotten, and clearly weathered, they provided us with nearly 13 perfect scions for grafting, in what will be the focal point of the farm, they will be 1. Potter’s Reliant 2. Mrs. Lee Potter and 3. Idlewild.

Which will be the official name of the farm and orchard. We will always be MIgardener and again, nothing is changing here. But the name of the farm will be Idlewild Farm and Orchard

Quick tip! If you plant indoors and your seedlings start to stretch, before seeing if they will correct the issue themselves, take action. Either increase the amount of light, or move your lights closer, or keep them on longer (or any combination of those three), and then restart a few plants. Generally, it is best to not have any legginess in seedlings as it won’t ever be corrected later on.
