Boogs [Old Channel]

For the 1st proper "blog" post, let's talk Menus.
I can't imagine this topic ever being worth it's own video, so I'll drip my thoughts on this matter here.

By menus, I mean a specific design choice for menus- fitting it's intended operating system. In the collage attached, You can see how Smash Ultimate and Mario Odyssey both take the Switch's Home Menu design as a source of inspiration / direct design direction.
This has it's ups and downs. On one hand, familiarity is key, as with neither of these games ever being on another console, Nintendo has the benefit of making the different menus of the game works the same as the Switch's UI, which helps users avoid confusion, know where to look, all that jazz. That's good.
Another good outcome of this is a seanless transition: I often double pause my games, Once pause within the game, then zoom out to the Home Menu of the Switch. That way I don't sit down, hit A and don't find myself in a weird position, i have a little more space of mind to re-establish myself within the game. Those are big words to say "i don't pause well".
And yes, pausing mario odyssey works well with this, as the menu's resemble each other, it transitiond nicely.

The problem begins with notifications.
While the Switch may not have any sort of Messaging system, you're still able to recieve notification for when your friends are online, playing a game and so on. The samr UI element is used when you adjust Volume, as can be noticed if you adjust volume while another notification is visible.
Mario Odyssey thinks it's smart. No it's not. It uses the exact same notification box, but on the right side of the screen instead of left like the actual system notifs, and uses those to update you about balloons or whatever.
Now, this does work pretty well, but my main concern with menus that are designed around their home system, is their future versions and systems.

See, when Captain Toad was ported to the switch, it was glaringly obvious that all the UI was made for the original Wii U system- The Wii UI, if you will. That looked pretty rough in itself, but where the real stinkers started was the amiibo still retaining the animation from the Wii U GamePad:
twitter.com/akfamilyhomeak/status/1017024847858130…Now that's some garbage, baby!

It worked pretty well and probably looked neat on the original system, but sticks out do weirdly in the new system- and it'll make little sense to redesign the menu and button icons just so it fits a new system.... so will Odyssey and Ultimate look just as tied to the original Switch software for the rest of time? Will Captain Toad still look as weird when it's on ANOTHER new system? Will the next Captain Toad game keep the Wii U design of it's menus? Where will our heroes find themselves next?

Find out on the next mildly thoight provoking blog post

Good news gamer girls, I can now use this Community Post thing.
If I have a video topic I can't quite manage to extend enough to justify a whole video, like random passing thoughts that can't really go anywhere, and that's mostly it.

As most of you know from discord, school is pretty rough so I rather focus on that, but I do try to make a proper scripted & edited video come out at least once every 1 weeks. Streams remaining as usual, and yeah, Smash Ultimate. Oh my.

Expect a lot of low effort highlights and clips from Ultimate. December gon be a good time baby yeehaw
