Sometimes people ask me in comments or DMs how they can learn to do film analysis. The answer is: don't study film analysis. Instead study filmmaking, art, and media theory. Watching movies is good, but it won't give you a complete understanding. A lot of what I know comes from practical experience in film and video production, but the other best way to learn about filmmaking is by reading books.
I've released a bookshelf tour of some of the film, media theory, and art criticism books that have informed my videos and perspective over the years and you can watch both parts right now on Nebula: nebula.tv/videos/thomasflight-more-film-and-media-…

Eddington, a haywire dive into the panic attack insanity of 2020, is going to be divisive for sure. I have mixed feelings, but think Ari Aster captures the feeling of recent social media fueled lunacy better than anything else I've seen.

One of the things I love most about Studio Ghibli animation is the lighting, it's so consistently beautiful. In these shots we don't see the water, but the way the water shapes the light. This month for my Patreon Film Club we're discussing Spirited Away. You can see my notes on the film and join in the discussion here: www.patreon.com/posts/126436861

Saddened today to hear of the passing of one of my favorite artists. David Lynch will be missed.
I share some more thoughts on what he meant to me in this article: open.substack.com/pub/thomasflight/p/david-lynch-c…

@BroeyDeschanel does a great job tackling Denis Villeneuve's hot take on dialogue and I dropped by to share my thoughts. Check it out:
