most famous objects in the museum.
It is an intriguing combination of myth,
history and legend.
The prism was mounted on a central
spindle so that it could be rotated. It
lists a succession of cities, their rulers,
and the length of their reign going
back to the creation of kingship. The list
does not present a factual history; it is
a literary creation that connected the
current ruler with the god-given gift
of civilisation. Some of the earliest kings
are mythical and alleged to have lived
for over 20,000 years, while the later
entries increasingly correspond
with history.
