Watch flautist and composer Eliza Marshall as she reflects on the track 'First Light', the second single from her forthcoming 'New Birth EP'. 'First Light' is out now on Real World X.
‘First Light was very inspired by a time in Kenya when I got up early and I could hear all the cicadas in the long grasses,’ says Eliza. ‘It felt really appropriate to use those sounds within the recording and then be able to layer-up lots of different bass flute sounds, some balafon, a few vocals and then the haunting flute melody on top of it.’
‘First Light could be the sunrise, a new dawn but it could also be a life coming into the world. What is that first light that you see? It’s a very beautiful thing, the innocence of that first moment in the world. But this isn't always a happy place. This isn't a perfect world, much as we'd love that. There are lots of things we need to fix. There's an element of sadness or an element of realisation that this isn't just this perfect earth.’
Eliza Marshall reflects on recording her debut solo EP at Real World Studios. The first single New Birth is available to hear now and the New Birth EP is released on Real World X on 23 May, 2025.
"Being back at Real World Studios to record my EP is a really important part of this project for me. It’s a place which has a lot of meaning for me, and holds so many inspiring musical creations. The producer I’ve been working with, Graeme Pleeth, absolutely loves working there, and we were extremely lucky to have Hans Martin Buff ‘Buff’ involved with the engineering for us. I’d met him when we were working on Peter’s i/o album, so it was a real treat to have him on board. What a team! And the wonderful Bob from RW as well, one very lucky Liza."
New Music out today on Real World X by Eliza Marshall. Listen to first track New Birth, the title track of her debut EP - lnk.to/XRW48 Renowned for her work with the award-winning folk group Ranagri, Eliza is also an in-demand session player contributing to records by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, First Aid Kit, Florence & The Machine and The White Stripes. She was a member of Peter Gabriel's New Blood Orchestra and also appears on his current album i/o. "This EP is unlike anything I’ve written before. It pushes me far beyond my comfort zone. It’s filled with tribal chanting vocals, powerful percussive layers, lots of whistles and electronics.
I've had a whole range of influences in my life that are beyond classical music, which have shaped the musician I am today - a mix of many different genres. I don’t believe artists need to be confined to a single style. I love the idea of cross-pollination, of sharing influences and ideas across cultures globally. I hope this spirit of openness and exchange comes through in my EP

Tree – The Heartwood Remixes, sees John Metcalfe re-contextualise three of the pieces from last year’s beautiful, emotional album Tree.
The EP is released on Friday 2 August, but ahead of his performance at the WOMAD Festival this weekend, a first track Dusk (Heartwood Remix) is available now.
“With these 3 tracks from ’Tree’ I felt there was something closer to the emotional core of the record that might be found. The string recording sessions at Abbey Road were very powerful for me - they are the nearest the music gets to being all performance and no production, the most human part of the sound. So, these remixes are based on that - I have stripped away as many other elements as possible to further expose the heart of the record, the sonic fingerprint, the ink that writes the letter.” - John Metcalfe

The song emphasizes the brevity of life, encouraging kindness and appreciation of the beauty around us. It calls for purifying our hearts of resentment, recognizing the ephemeral nature of life and our common destiny.
Come, enter the world of Swaken, the much anticipated second album by French-Moroccan power quartet Bab L' Bluz, is released today on Real World Records. Eleven tracks that spark and pulse with kinetic, pedal-to-the-metal energy. lnk.to/RW259
