In this 85th anniversary year of the Battle of Britain the usual crowd of ‘celebrity’ military authors have turned their attention to the summer of 1940. Some merely scratch the surface of the subject, while others simply regurgitate all that has gone before, including the myths and mistakes. They all warmly praise each other’s work in reviews whilst the publishers make breathless claims about their work being ‘groundbreaking’ and ‘new’. One even went so far as to suggest that up until this moment, the Luftwaffe has only been portrayed as a ‘cartoonish antagonist’, which came as a bit of a surprise to the many professional Luftwaffe historians who have been interviewing, researching, and writing about the subject for the past fifty years.

Of course, if you only ever read the other ‘celebrity’ books when doing your research, then this is probably true!

Here at Wing Leader, our approach is a little different. We don’t publish ‘celebrity’ authors. Instead we prefer to stick with the specialist historians who have been studying their subject for decades. The ones who have travelled across Europe interviewing veterans from both sides. The ones who have all the official records to hand, and who have the knowledge to understand how to use them. And most importantly, the ones who really know what happened in the summer of 1940.

That’s why we are proud to announce the forthcoming launch of two important new books.

The first is ‘Zerstörer’ by internationally renowned researchers and authors, John Vasco and Peter Cornwell. Their collective knowledge of the events of 1940 is unmatched, and draws upon their decades of research into primary sources, from the Bundesarchivmilitärarchiv (BAMA) and the Deutschdienststelle (WASt.) in Germany, to the Public Record Office (now the National Archive), Imperial War Museum, RAE Farnborough, and MoD (Air Historical Branch) in England.

They have also interviewed and corresponded with hundreds of relevant combatants on both sides over several decades, and work closely with other leading historians who have also conducted decades of research into the period, such as Chris Goss, Andy Saunders and Simon Parry.

Originally published 35 years ago, this updated and expanded hardback version of over 300 pages, contains new information regarding events concerning the Messerschmitt 110 and its crews in 1940, with particular emphasis on the Battle of Britain. It is supplemented by just under 600 photographs, many new and previously unpublished, and demolishes many myths, misconceptions, and downright incorrect information, on the Messerschmitt 110 previously in print.

This book is THE definitive work on the Bf 110 in 1940, and eclipses anything else that has gone before it. If you want to understand what it was really like to be a Luftwaffe airman in 1940, in their own words, then this is the book for you.

The second book is Volume 19 of our Battle of Britain Combat Archive Series by Simon Parry. Quite simply, if you haven’t got this series already then you really haven’t got the latest research, knowledge and information on the Battle.

The fascinating thing about listening to second world war fighter pilots under all banners is that they all say they became addicted to the thrill of the hunt.

They often lament on how nothing can compare to it since and became life long friends with their enemies in the aftermath of the conflict.

It's certainly a unique perspective in warfare. A deadly game. But a game, nonetheless.
