A larger and more robust ulna can provide more surface area for muscle attachment, especially for the Triceps brachii tendon at the olecranon process (the bony tip of the elbow).
The triceps inserts onto the upper part of the Ulna, so a more robust ulna can potentially support:
A larger attachment area for the tendon
Greater leverage for elbow extension
More room for a thicker or stronger triceps attachment structure
Contrary to narratives promoted by some media influencers, the size of the Triceps is not determined solely by the robusticity of the humerus. Muscle size results from a more complex combination of anatomical factors, including attachment area, which includes the size and robustness of the ulna which the triceps muscle attaches too.(see Images 1 and 2).
For comparison, Images 3 and 4 illustrate the relative robusticity of the Ulna and radius in tigers and lions, respectively. The tiger’s more robust ulna can provide a larger attachment surface, supporting greater triceps development and stronger elbow extension mechanics.
