The Sons of History podcast brings you the best historians and authors discussing everything history. Hosted by Dustin Bass and Alan Wakim, our goal is to engage a wide audience through historical facts and analysis, humor, and amazing guests.
Along with our podcast, we also shoot documentaries, video and discuss places to visit to learn more history, and also do historical readings, like the Declaration of Independence and The Gettysburg Address.
We hope that once you become a fan of the show that you will love history and understand its importance in our everyday lives as much as we do.
The Sons of History
EIGHTY YEARS AGO, TODAY...
On a quiet Sunday morning, six aircraft carriers launched 353 warplanes. Most carried bombs or torpedoes. Their target was the United States Pacific Fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor - as well as Army and Navy aircraft based out of several airfields throughout the island of Oahu.
It was a bold move by the Japanese Empire which killed over 2,400 Americans, and crippled the US Navy so that their other planned operations throughout the Pacific and Indian Oceans could go mostly unchallenged. Those operations affected the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, China, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and the countless millions of people caught in their destructive path.
Two big problems Japan now faced:
One) It had attacked a neutral nation without provocation, without warning, and without a formal declaration of war. Peace negotiations were still on-going. The Japanese Ambassador in Washington DC ran behind schedule that day and did not meet with US Secretary of State Cordell Hull until after the attack began. Japan now faced a united, determined, pissed-off nation hell-bent on revenge.
Two) The primary targets in the Pearl Harbor attack (the US Navy's three aircraft carriers - Enterprise, Lexington, and Saratoga) were not present that Sunday morning. That twist of fate would haunt Japan. Two more (Hornet and Yorktown) soon joined the fight.
The attack on Pearl Harbor was not the only event that day. It was just the beginning... and Japan had six months to achieve its goals before the United States was strong enough to strike back.

Last night, Dustin Bass got the opportunity to present the documentary to Mr. George Kaleel's daughter and granddaughter. They loved the documentary and in turn presented him with Mr. Kaleel's 7th Corps map that shows the First Army's march from Utah Beach in Normandy across the Rhine River into Germany. It was such an incredible honor to be presented with such a gift. He also received Mr. Kaleel's photo of the entire 7th Corps.
Mr. Kaleel passed away at the age of 100 on April 19 this year, just shortly before completion of the documentary.

The Sons of History
We hosted our very first history event on April 17 and it was a true success. But before we get into how the event went, we first need to talk about April 16.
We dodged two major bullets that day. The first was with the hotel where we had booked Dr. Stephen L. Hardin. Dustin had booked the hotel through Booking.com and so all was set and ready to go. While at the bank, he received a phone call from said Dr. Hardin with the news that he did not have a reservation. STRESS ALERT!
We knew that couldn’t be right because the money had changed hands and we had sent the confirmation number and everything over. Dustin talked to the young girl who was trying to help Hardin, while at the same time not being very helpful (God bless her heart). She informed Dustin that there was no one under the name of Dr. Stephen L. Hardin who had a room reservation. She therefore suggested he contact Booking.com, and so he did. He informed Dr. Hardin that he would get the situation straightened, and Hardin took the situation like a saint.
The Booking.com representative was stellar and had the situation adjusted in about one minute. The problem was that the computer had inserted Hardin’s name as “L. HardinDr.” How could the young lady at the front desk not figure that out? The Booking.com representative stated the same.
Hardin also had a friend coming along with him, who booked a room at the same hotel: Dr. Jody Edward Ginn (who we recently had on the podcast). When he called Dr. Hardin, he was hanging out with Ginn. In the end, no harm and Hardin had his room.
Dustin had scheduled dinner reservations at a new place in The Woodlands called Whiskey Cake. The reservation had been made for 7:45 pm. Dustin and Alan arrived as Hardin and Ginn were walking up to the restaurant. A quick hello and some small talk later, Dustin went to the hostess stand and informed them his party had arrived. She asked what the party name was. They checked the list, but there was no reservation. Could this really be two snafus within hours of each other? Was this how the entire weekend would be? A comedy of errors.
