VOI, Taita Taveta County- In a major boost for Kenya's gemstone mining sector, the Voi Gemstone Value Addition & Marketing Centre Chairman, Mr. Frank Righa, held a strategic meeting with a delegation of US Gemologists and Gem Cutters to chart a new future for ASM miners across Taita Taveta County.

The exclusive meeting, held at the Centre's offices in Voi on Wednesday, 14th October 2026, focused on how the Centre will directly support artisanal and small-scale miners in trading their gems and accessing lucrative international markets.

The Core Agenda: From Mine to Global Market

Chairman Frank Righa outlined a comprehensive plan to end decades of exploitation where local miners sold precious gems, including the world-famous Tsavorite, at throwaway prices to middlemen.
"Our mission is simple: Support our miners across Taita Taveta to trade with dignity and meet international standards," said Chairman Righa. "The Voi Gemstone Value Addition & Marketing Centre is not just a building; it is a gateway for our miners to the world."

Key Pillars Discussed:

1. Direct Trading & Fair Pricing: The Centre will provide a transparent, government-backed platform where miners can sell their gemstones directly, eliminating brokers and ensuring fair market value.

2. International Market Access: Through partnerships with US gemologists and cutters, Taita Taveta gems will now have direct linkage to buyers in the USA, Europe, and Asia, where Tsavorite fetches premium prices.

3. Meeting International Standards & Cuts: The US delegation emphasized training local gem cutters on international precision cutting, grading, and certification. A poorly cut Tsavorite can lose 70% of its value. The Centre will offer cutting-edge lapidary training to ensure Voi-cut gems meet GIA and other global standards.

Why Tsavorite Matters

Taita Taveta is the only source of Tsavorite in the world - a rare, vibrant green garnet discovered in Tsavo. Despite its rarity, most value addition has been done outside Kenya. Chairman Righa's plan will ensure value addition happens in Voi, creating jobs and retaining wealth within the county.

A Win for Kenya-USA Collaboration

The US gemologists praised the initiative, noting that ethically sourced, traceable Kenyan Tsavorite is in high demand in the American luxury jewelry market. They committed to supporting technology transfer and buyer linkages.

The meeting marks a turning point for Kenya's mining sector, aligning with the government's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and value addition policy.
