Many pregnant women are not aware of this, and they always believe it's nothing to worry about.
Almost all pregnant women would experience leg swelling in pregnancy. But a handful of them are caused by diseases that can pose as danger to your pregnancy.

Most women have normal leg swelling, which causes the accumulation of fluid in the lower body. It doesn't harm anyone.
But before you assume it's normal, talk to your doctor to do these two checks for you.

Before we talk about the checks, let's talk about the common causes of leg swelling:
1.Pregnancy-induced hypertension /chronic hypertension
2.Preeclampsia

There are other causes arising from blood clots, lymphatic problems, or even kidney problems.

But I want to focus on the first 2.

Considering the two common causes I mentioned, it is important for every pregnant woman with leg swelling to check their blood pressure and urinalysis first, before assuming that the leg swelling is normal. Especially if you're above 20 weeks.

4 years ago, a client lost her 36 weeks old baby because she thought the leg swelling was normal. Her work colleague told her it was normal. Not knowing she had preeclampsia and her placenta separated.

She almost lost her own life.

Before making an assumption, talk to a doctor. We have a doctor every tim; 24-hour at Preggify . Don't wait for you to experience it. Join us so we can monitor you from day 1.

Here is one mistake I see a lot of pregnant women make.

This is sister to sister talk, let's have this conversation because I really love you.

I know that there is a lot of information out there and most of it is targeted to put fear in you.

So, you live every day in fear even in your doctor's office.

Do you know that your motherly instinct is very powerful?
Don't let anyone dismiss your complaints because they assume it happened to another person and it was normal.

Always insist on proper investigation. This is not only applicable to you, but to your baby when the baby is born.

Once you feel that instinct, my dear, kwechiri there. Let them give you a proper explanation or investigate why you're feeling that.

It's better safe than sorry.

It's better you spend extra money and get that investigation done, on time.

Never let fear make you accept what you don't understand. Ask questions.

It is your health providers responsibility to make you understand your health condition and management so you can have enough information to either accept or decline. It is not a favour. It is your right as a patient.

You, too, can contribute to your own care, but firstly, you need to understand it.

𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝑾𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝑰𝒈𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒆 𝑺𝒊𝒈𝒏𝒔 𝑶𝒇 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒔𝒊𝒂 𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝑰𝒕 𝑾𝒂𝒔 𝑻𝒐𝒐 𝑳𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑯𝒆𝒓

Don't make the same mistake, and share this post to save more women.

One day at the hospital, we heard people screaming, and it was one of our antenatal clients who was rushed into the hospital. She was unconscious and had lost so much bl00d.

A bedside scan showed the source of the blood to be from her womb, and her placenta had separated.

it was a very sad experience.

Her blood pressure was very high, with 3+++ of protein in her urine.
She was wheeled in for an emergency CS to save her life.

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED?

This lady got pregnant and registered in the hospital, but it was really not easy for her to always come to the hospital for every complaint due to the nature of her job.

Then, one day, she noticed that she had developed leg swelling on both legs. And asked her older female colleague (who was a mum) if it was normal in pregnancy, and she said yes.

Little did they know that she had developed hypertension in pregnancy, which later caused preeclampsia, and as a result, her placenta detached from it's position leading to ble.eding.

Even though her life was saved, her baby of 36 weeks couldn't make it, and it was a very sad experience.

Now, imagine if this woman had a platform like Preggify Preggify where she could easily talk to a qualified doctor and midwife? She would have gotten the right information and directed to get basic tests done at home or close to her office, just in time to save her life and that of her baby.

5 Things you do that are potentially harmful to your newborn:

😩Giving them agbo or herbal concoction to wash and clease the stomach. Agbo can damage the immature liver and kidney leading to death.

👎Pressing the baby's breasts with hot water. Never do that as this can cause serious burn and injury. If the baby has small breasts, it is due to her Mother's hormone. Give it a few weeks, and it will disappear. No pressing, no squeezing, no ironing.

👎Giving baby water during exclusive breastfeeding. The breastmilk contains over 70% of water, so it is enough to serve your baby when fed properly. If baby cries, it is not a sign of thirst, even if he told you, just breastfeed instead. Extra water can fill the tummy and make them malnourished. It can also dilute the electrolytes excessively, leading to organ damage and death.

👎Throwing baby in the air. Throwing newborns in the air makes them vulnerable to brain injury. A baby can not control or carry their head (yet to achieve proper neck control), so throwing them up or shaking them excessively can cause brain injury. To pacify the baby, just support their back and neck and gently move them up and down in your arm.

👎Washing the baby girls v@gina with hot water and antiseptics because she is blee ding. Blee ding in newborns is usually due to the effect of the mother's hormones, leading to false menstruation.
You don't have to do anything because it will resolve in a few days to week. Wash the outer part of the private part with lukewarm water only.

Which of these are you guilty of?

I kept hitting my legs on the mattress

As a pregnant woman, you might feel this intense burning , crawling or pulling sensation in your leg, especially while sleeping at night. Some people call it restless leg syndrome.

This may not be common, but it can disturb your sleep.

Here are practical home remedies for it.

🤰See your doctor to be sure you are getting enough iron. This could be a sign of low iron in the blood. Take your routine drugs religiously.

🤰Make sure you take adequate water during the day. At least 3.5 litres.

🤰 Remain active. Mild /Tolerable exercise is advised.

🤰Take your calcium, folic acid and iron as prescribed

🤰Leg massage and rub ( Your partner should help you)

🤰Walk around when you wake up. Moving your legs improves the symptom.

🤰Reduce your intake of soda and caffeine

🤰Apply warm compress (warm towel is enough) to the legs.

🤰Elevate your legs on a pillow while sleeping.

🤰This experience is temporary. It will resolve as soon as your pregnancy ends.

🧑‍⚕️ Make out time to sleep during the day until your symptoms improve. And stick to a sleeping routine at night.

Which of these tips have you practised?
