Something different:
As mentioned in a previous post, I have been working on my first OO gauge layout. Coming in at 18 feet long and 4 feet wide - tapering into 3 feet wide in the middle - it is a sizeable jump from the Hornby train set I had as a kid.
For a project that started 8 months ago, a large portion (60%) of the layout is nearing completion. And so, to ensure I wasn’t going to miss any important details, a short trip was necessary to the Plymouth Model Railway exhibition. The layouts were excellent, and highlighted I had missed a loading bay! Not a problem, as I still have another station to build.
Another reason to head out was to try and find a GWR Castle Class locomotive. This is a western region inspired layout; the giveaway will be the drop down lower quadrant semaphores. The layout is also nameless!
The locomotive I bought was 5068 Beverston Castle; however, it was an identity it wouldn’t hold for long. Etched brass nameplates had already been purchased from Fox Transfers, to rename and renumber the castle to 5010 Restormel Castle. Sporting an appropriate headboard and a wheel clean later, the Castle is an excellent runner. £80 very well spent!
The layout has not featured in film format on the channel. Would this be something of interest?

April 18th to 19th: The Great Britain XVIII
📍Day 1 - London Paddington to Penzance via Pewsey
📍Day 2 - Penzance to Chester via Bristol
The first steam railtour to visit Penzance since 2022, the tour is steam hauled throughout with a West Coast locomotive.
September 12th: The Mayflower
📍Birmingham to Plymouth via Bristol
7029 Clun Castle* and 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe unassisted over the Devonian gradients.
Last Sundays of May, July, August and September: The Royal Duchy
📍Bristol to Par via Yatton
Utilising the turntable at St Blazey, the tours will be hauled by a West Coast steam locomotive.
September 22nd and 25th: The Cornish Riviera
📍London Paddington to Penzance via Pewsey
71000 Duke of Gloucester is booked to lead the tour.
Throughout May to September: 12 Saturdays of the English Riviera Express/Torbay Express
📍Taunton to Kingswear
60007 Sir Nigel Gresley is heading to Kingswear on 7 Summer Saturdays. 61306 Mayflower is thought to be filling in any gaps.

⚠️Watch out for cancellations!
With 45212 out of action and West Coast Railways ending their partnership with the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust (owners of 60163 Tornado), the Railway Touring Company have NO STEAM LOCOMOTIVES available in England and Wales. It is unclear how long until 34028 Eddystone is ready to join the mainline.
Four RTC tours have been cancelled or amended, including the West Somerset Steam Express due to take place next Saturday, August 9th. This has been cancelled.

I’ve made an film! For the first rail-tour of 2024, 7029 Clun Castle hauls the Cathedrals Express to Salisbury.
The departure shot is one of the best shots I’ve ever taken. It is towards the end of the of the film. Make sure to watch it.
