Monthly Live Q&A: The Planet Healers Path – Questions from the Land

Join Paul Morris (M.Sc., CERP) each month for a live Q&A drawn from real questions people are asking as they walk the Planet Healers Path.

We explore the five stages—Awakening, Seeing, Learning, Doing, and Teaching & Being—with attention to what is actually happening on the land. Tsunul Reserve serves as the living example: eleven years of tropical dry forest recovery on a former cattle pasture, the return of the Coz, soil coming back to life, and native species returning. Bring your specific questions about reading a landscape, choosing species, soil regeneration, skill-stays, starting on your own land, or any part of the Path. Whether you are just beginning or already restoring, the session is a place to clarify the next step. These sessions are currently open and free to everyone.

Monthly Field Notes from Tsunul Reserve – Live from the Land

On the first Wednesday of each month at 7am,

Join Paul Morris for a live field note update straight from Tsunul Reserve. Eleven years into the recovery of this 39-hectare tropical dry forest, we walk the land together and note what is changing: the return of the Coz, the quiet work of mycelium in the leaf litter, new species appearing in the cenote, and the slow shift from compacted pasture back toward forest. No slides, no theory — just observation from the place itself.

Bring your own questions about what you are seeing on your land, or simply listen. These sessions are currently open and free to everyone.

Planet Healers

This morning, I sat with the sunrise over Tsunul Reserve and went live for the first time.

We talked about the sit spot — the practice of staying in one place long enough that the land stops performing for you and starts being itself. About working with ecological grief rather than avoiding it. About the ripple that becomes possible when enough people are paying attention in enough places.

youtube.com/live/4PTDjccoLdI?si=m9G9QhRZZBWdGYX4

It was unplanned in the best way. The sunrise was real. The conversation was real.

In the meantime — if this resonates, the path is here:

Started writing my next book: Fundamentals of Ecosystem Restoration

After completing my master's degree, I delved into native plant propagation, acquired a 95-acre farm, and turned a steep learning curve into mastery—growing over 350 species, half a million plants/year, and leading ecosystem restoration projects. Now, 'Fundamentals of Ecosystem Restoration' distills 25+ years into over 100 chapters: From planetary boundaries to tropical forest revival, it's your blueprint for healing the planet.
Sections on species ecology, energy cycles, restoration practices, and more. For ecologists, practitioners, and earth healers.

#EcosystemRestoration #SustainableLiving #ClimateAction #PlanetHealers 🌍🪴"Preface

In an era where ecosystems face unprecedented threats from climate change, deforestation, and urbanization, the urgency of ecological restoration has never been greater. The Fundamentals of Ecosystem Restoration book offers a comprehensive guide for practitioners, students, and enthusiasts dedicated to healing our planet. This edition reflects the latest advancements in restoration science, incorporating cutting-edge techniques, case studies, and global perspectives to address the challenges of the 21st century.

The field of ecological restoration has undergone significant evolution. New methodologies, such as eDNA, acoustic monitoring, AI, GIS, drones, and microbiome-enhanced soil restoration, have emerged. At the same time, global initiatives like the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) have galvanized international collaboration. This edition integrates these developments, emphasizing practical applications and community-driven approaches. Drawing on decades of fieldwork, including projects in diverse ecosystems such as the tropical forests of Yucatan, Mexico, and the wetlands of Canada, this work highlights the importance of combining scientific rigour with local knowledge.

This book is designed to empower readers with the tools to restore degraded landscapes, foster biodiversity, and build resilient ecosystems. Whether you are a seasoned ecologist, a community organizer, or a newcomer to the field, these resources aim to inspire action and provide actionable insights. Together, we can create a future where ecosystems thrive, supporting both human and non-human life for generations to come.

About the Author
Paul Morris, M.Sc., is a globally recognized restoration ecologist and Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner (CERP) with over 30 years of experience in ecological restoration and conservation. As the co-founder of the Resilient Ecosystems Institute A.C. and Planet Healers, Paul has spearheaded transformative restoration projects, including the restoration of 39 hectares of tropical forest in Yucatan, Mexico. These initiatives have welcomed over 100 international volunteers and supported three thesis projects with Mexican universities, fostering a new generation of restoration practitioners.

Through his leadership at Planet Healers, Paul amplifies the work of grassroots environmentalists, providing resources and inspiration to drive ecosystem restoration and biodiversity protection worldwide. His organization emphasizes empowering communities with knowledge and skills to adopt nature-based solutions and regenerative practices.

Paul was also the founder of Acorus Restoration, a native plant nursery and ecological consulting firm in Canada, where he propagated over 400 species of wetland, woodland, and prairie plants, producing 500,000 plants annually to support restoration efforts. His expertise spans ecological consultation, environmental impact studies, and wetland evaluations, with notable projects including surveys for the Highway 407 extensions and work with the Ministry of Natural Resources. As a researcher, Paul has advanced techniques in wetland, prairie, and woodland ecology, contributing to the field through studies and educational workshops.

An accomplished educator, Paul serves as the course instructor for the ongoing Introduction to Ecosystem Restoration online course and the Foundations of Ecosystem Restoration field course, offered in partnership with the Soil Food Web School and Ecosystem Restoration Communities. He has led workshops on ecological restoration, native plant gardening, and conservation for organizations like the Society for Ecological Restoration. His advocacy extends to environmental policy, having served as chair and vice chair of the Norfolk County Environmental Advisory Committee, as well as a volunteer firefighter.

Paul’s commitment to ecological stewardship is reflected in his holistic approach, which integrates science, community engagement, and mindfulness practices, such as yoga and meditation, into his work. His YouTube channel and Patreon community further amplify his educational outreach, sharing insights on ecological restoration and sustainable living.

Hi, I’m Paul Morris, a restoration ecologist. My partner, Sophia Ortiz, is an agronomist. Together, we’ve spent years working with communities to regenerate ecosystems, restore degraded lands, and apply practical, low-cost methods for healing the Earth.

In this guide, we’ll focus on biochar—what it is, how to make it, how to use it, and why it’s so valuable. This is the written version of a video series we created to make the process accessible to anyone, whether you're on a small farm, in a rural village, or want to do something good for your garden and the health of your soil.

We'll show you how to make biochar using different methods. Our first episodes focus on using a Kon-Tiki kiln and an oil barrel system, both of which can be built or adapted with materials available in most places.

These methods don’t require big machines or expensive inputs. They’re based on simple, replicable designs that turn waste biomass into something regenerative—carbon-rich, soil-enhancing, and locally valuable.

As you read this guide, you'll find a blend of practical instructions, scientific insights, and global examples. Each chapter is crafted to help you take action immediately and understand how your efforts fit into the bigger picture of ecosystem restoration and land stewardship.

Let’s begin our journey by taking a closer look at biochar and why it matters so much right now.
