This I-beam, recovered from one of the Twin Towers, stands on the grounds of the Nike Missile Site BA-79 as a memorial to September 11, 2001.
It serves as a reminder of that tragic day and the small but meaningful role connected to this site: when all other aircraft were grounded, a Civil Air Patrol aircraft provided the federal government with the first direct aerial perspective of Ground Zero in New York, as described on the memorial plaque.

For over 30 years, I’d catch brief glimpses of the C&H factory while flying over the Carquinez Bridge at 65 MPH—always just out of reach. I’d long wanted to see it up close, not just as a blur through a car window. Finally made it happen, and honestly, it was everything I hoped it would be. Industrial dreams do come true, folks. In summer 2024, I was listening through Billboard’s Top 100 singles (1950–present) while curating my playlist for a Boston-to-NYC thru hike. When I hit “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden” by Lynn Anderson, I knew I had to use it for a goofy, satirical part of a video. A week before my recent Mare Island–Benicia hike, I scouted the Crockett-to-Martinez trail and saw the cemetery—perfect for a lighthearted scene. This two-day trek begins on Mare Island, once home to the first U.S. Navy base on the West Coast, before crossing the Carquinez Bridge into the historic town of Crockett, known for its connection to the C&H Sugar refinery. After an overnight stop at the midpoint, the journey continues through Martinez, the birthplace of John Muir, and across the Benicia-Martinez Bridge. The trek concludes at the scenic Benicia Marina, in a town that once served as California’s capital. I'm anticipating stunning views, rich history, and miles of adventure await.
