I’m H.G. Roberts, author of On Monsters and Phantoms, a memoir that recounts my journey through extreme religious trauma and deconversion from Christianity. You'll also see me featured in the documentary film "Heathens," produced by Pale Blue Dot Films. Heathens, premiering later in 2025 or early 2026, is a hard-hitting documentary that explores why more and more Americans are leaving the Christian faith, and the tension that creates within families and communities.
I explore what religious trauma is, how it forms, how Christianity, despite its beneficial claims, can rob us of our agency, self-esteem, self-worth and identity, which leads to trauma, how religious trauma ties into our personalities, mental temperaments and life experiences, and, more importantly, our adverse childhood experiences, and finally what you can do to overcome religious trauma if you’re suffering from it. #religioustraumahealing #religioustrauma #exchristian #deconstruction #deconversion
