How Fit Should I Be to climb Kilimanjaro?

One of the main questions people ask is how fit they need to be to hike Kilimanjaro. This is a common concern because you want to make sure they don’t have issues on the mountain and that they can summit easily.

The good news is that you need to be in good physical shape to hike Kilimanjaro but there is no need to be super fit. Keep in mind Kilimanjaro is a slow uphill hike, not real mountain climbing. However, you still need to make sure you are exercising and hiking in preparation for the climb as well as prepare as best you can for altitude sickness.

How Fit Should I Be to climb Kilimanjaro?
To be able to climb Kilimanjaro, most people do not need to be incredibly fit, but a moderate level of fitness is necessary. This, combined with good acclimatization, is typically sufficient for the climb.

To prepare for the trek, it is recommended to engage in at least 2 to 3 months of training prior to arriving in Tanzania. If you are already in shape and comfortable with hiking, then that is even better.

While the more fit you are, the more enjoyable your climb will be, there is no need to hit the gym for hours at a time to prepare for Kilimanjaro. The main point of fitness when it comes to Kilimanjaro is endurance because you will be walking for long hours every day.

If you imagine what it’s like walking up and down hills for 6 or 7 hours a day, this is what it’s like to climb Kilimanjaro. This is one of the reasons why we encourage all climbers to walk outside and hike as part of their training as well as going to the gym for other exercises.

Part of walking for long hours every day is also mental preparedness. If you can push yourself to keep going even when you are tired and feel like giving up, this can help you reach the top of Kilimanjaro.

Did you know that gorillas share 98.3% of their genetic code with humans? 🦍

Our #HappyClients trekked through Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, encountering wild Mountain Gorillas face-to-face. This exclusive wildlife experience, with limited visitors each year, is an adventure they will never forget.

Their trip didn't end there as they went on to South Africa to share a pool with some thirsty elephants while on safari and discover all that the seaside city of Cape Town and the Cape Winelands have to offer.

"This was truly the trip of our lifetimes. It has been 6 months since we returned and we still think of the trip daily. The Bespoke African Safari Co. was nothing short of exceptional; every detail was planned in advance and proceeded without a hitch. We couldn’t be happier with the trip!"

FEEDBACK AND LAST SADDLES: A Postcard from Kenya 🦒🐘 Masai Mara with Gordie Church ✨

“I rode Flashman during my wonderful week in the Mara. All the horses were so well cared for, loved their job and were treated as part of the family. It was really nice to see how Felicia matched each rider with their horse after meeting us all, to ensure both rider and horse had a great week together. The accommodation was great and sleeping on the river’s edge opposite a pod of hippos was unforgettable. The staff on this trip were a special bunch and went above and beyond to welcome us and ensure we had a great time. We had to seek shelter at a lodge one night due to intense rainfalls, and seeing everyone’s smiling faces singing Hakuna Matata as we drove back into camp the next day was an unforgettable memory. Game viewing was awesome, and cantering with Giraffe’s and Zebra’s was a dream come true. Words can’t do justice to this awesome week - can’t wait to come back.

Daisy was so kind and helpful. She talked through a bunch of different options with me to figure out which trip aligned with my needs at the time. She was also super patient when I developed an injury close to departure and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to go. Thanks so much for recommending this trip Daisy, I can’t thank you enough!” - Tiana, 2023

One of the world's greatest nature events happens in Africa; the great migration

South Africa has fenced reserves, but the remaining of Africa has mostly no fences.

Water is not managed and animals have to follow the rain. Africa has dry and rain season and the dry season can be so dry that huge areas are without water and/or no grass to eat. The animals are forced to move away and look for the rain.

The most famous event like this is the migration of the wildebeest.

For decades the wildebeest have run the same circle over and over. They know where to go every year to stay hydrated and have enough to eat for everybody

Over 1.5 million wildebeest are following the rain looking for water and green grass. It's not just wildebeest in this migration there are also over 300.000 zebra, 500.000 thompsons gazelles and 18.000 elands joining in the migration. These are the animals that are present in large numbers, but you will find many other different species there as well

The wildebeest migration is year round, but there are better times and places to go to see the event.

In some areas they have to cross a lot of rivers and the crocodiles are aware of that. Nature on it's best if you ask me

Off course it's not just crocodiles these animals have to worry about. The other predators are aware of the big event as well and they will use the opportunity for an easier meal.

The migration is not just about the herbivores, the predators are present as well.

Honestly it's one big crazy event that I witnessed myself in 2012. Seeing so many animals together is just mind blowing and we indeed found a lot of predators close by.

There are so many wildebeest you can't even count them and I even saw wildebeest climbing over each other.

It's was actually very interesting to watch: at some places the wildebeest would form a single line and all move on the same path, there would be plenty grass to walk next to each other, but for some reason it is only a single or few lines!

It is definitely one of world's greatest nature events!

If you want to see the migration of the wildebeest I can recommend to contact Jaco from Snyman Safaris

He has great deals for the migration on kabirasafaris.com/wildebeest-migration/ and he can help you make the perfect trip.

He also has a guided tour for the migration in Serengeti, Tanzania.

This tour is guided by Joseph himself and it's in the middle (the peak) of the migration, which is 14-21 September 2024.

For more information about the tour you can look on

kabirasafaris.com/tanzania/great-migration-safari/…

Definitely a trip of a lifetime and even more because you get to fly over the wildebeest in a hot air balloon!

My camera broke during my trip in Africa so I asked Joseph for some amazing photos of the wildebeest migration and he definitely delivered. All the photos with this post are from the great wildebeest migration. There were so many amazing photos that I went a bit over my normal 10 ;)

It was a cold morning as we left our camp in the Maasai Mara before dawn. We drove a few hours to the bank of the Emboo River where we’d be waiting for the wildebeest to cross the muddy croc-infested water.

The sun came up and the heat of the Kenyan sun started to beat down on our convertible Land Cruiser.

We waited and waited as the wildebeest slowly inched closer to the water, mustering up the courage to cross.

Finally, after almost 12 hours in the heat of the Maasai Mara, we were rewarded by one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles in Africa. The animals decided to cross at 5:30pm, right as the light was turning gold for sunset. Once one animal goes, they all follow. In this case, a family of brave zebras were first, then about 5000 wildebeest followed in a chaotic stampede.
