- The word "hippopotamus" is Greek in origin and essentially means "river horse" despite the fact they look more like cows.

- Hippos can reach up to 19mph / 30kmh over short distances.

- Hippos are aggressively territorial when it comes to water. They're also one of the most aggressive animals on the planet, and responsible for the most deaths caused by wild animals in Africa.

- Hippos will fight crocodiles.

- Hippos are cannibals. A few years ago there was a massive drop in the hippo population in a reserve and no-one could work out why. And then it was discovered that hippos were eating the infected corpses of their own dead, dying, and being eaten in turn, spreading a rather nasty virus very quickly.

- This hippo plays videogames.
