"Transitioning an outdoor cat indoors is one of the hardest things you can do as a cat owner - and sometimes it doesn't work."
Everyone acts like it's simple:
"Just keep them inside!"
"They'll adjust in a few weeks!"
"Indoor is always better!"
But the reality I see in rescue work:
→ Some cats grieve the loss of outdoor access like they've lost a family member
→ The transition can take 6-12+ months of constant vigilance
→ Some cats develop severe depression, aggression, or obsessive behaviors
→ Even with catios and enrichment, some never fully accept it
Does this mean we should let cats roam outdoors unsupervised?
NO. Outdoor cats live 2-5 years vs indoor 15-20 years. The risks are real.
But we need to be HONEST about how brutal the transition can be so people:
1. Prepare properly (enrichment is NON-NEGOTIABLE)
2. Get professional help when needed (vets, behaviorists)
3. Consider supervised outdoor access (catios, leash training)
4. Understand this is a MONTHS-long commitment
