THE NIGHT BRIEF

In September 2017, firefighters responding to a late-night call in Southfields, London, made a discovery that would shock an entire country.
In the back garden of an ordinary terraced house — a bonfire. Still burning. And right next to it — a barbecue. Chicken on the grill.
In the ashes, investigators found human fingers. Bone fragments. Teeth.
The couple standing beside the fire didn't run. They didn't panic. They were completely calm.
Her name was Sophie Lionnet. 21 years old. A French au pair who came to London to build a life. She was kind, quiet, and full of plans. She had no idea what she had walked into.
Her employer — Sabrina Kouider — had become convinced that a founding member of the 1990s pop group Boyzone was running a secret surveillance operation against her. And in her mind — Sophie was his spy.
There was no spy. There was no conspiracy. The threat existed entirely inside one woman's mind.
For weeks, Sophie was starved, isolated, and tortured. Eight and a half hours of interrogations were recorded on a mobile phone. Her voice on those recordings is exhausted. Confused. Terrified.
She never made it out.
In June 2018, both Sabrina Kouider and her partner Ouissem Meduni were found guilty of murder. Sabrina received a life sentence with a minimum of 30 years. Ouissem received a minimum of 23 years.
The judge described it as a case of exceptional cruelty. Sophie Lionnet had been treated not as a human being — but as an object.
The man she was accused of spying for had no idea Sophie Lionnet even existed.
She died for a delusion that was never real.
Remember her as she was. Not as she died.
