I started this journey because I wanted to feed my family better, and that hasn’t changed even though my food storage has. Read through for tips on getting started ↓
I use a three-layered food storage system that relies heavily on rotation, kitchen skills, and community.
Prep what you eat, so you can eat what you prep!
My three layers of food storage are:
Layer 1 - Kitchen Pantry or what we are eating right now
Layer 2 - Grocery Store or what we will be eating in the next year
Layer 3 - Long Term Layer or what we may need to eat in the future
All three layers work together in an emergency. Proper storage and rotation are essential to creating a system with no waste. As a homemaker, part of my job is to steward our resources well. This takes time, focus, and intentionality.
If you are a homesteader, you likely already have a great start to a layered food storage system. That year’s worth of applesauce you canned is layer 2, along with the beef cow in your freezer or the green beans growing in your garden. You may find that you already have a great kitchen pantry because you cook from scratch.
If you are just starting, here are some things you can do to get started:
1. Open your kitchen cabinets and buy more of what you see
2. Declutter and identify space for food storage. Get creative if you have a small space, our canning pantry once lived in our master bathroom.
3. Learn to cook from scratch because ingredients store longer than convience foods.
4. Identify local farmers if you can’t grow it or raise it yourself.
Find more resources and my food storage course on my website or the This Prepared Life App.

Let’s be real, sometimes it can seem scary out there. The news is doom and gloomy, headlines scream at us, social media posts are full of fear, it can be hard not to feel that. I get it, I am in that place sometimes too.
We cannot stay there. Feel it, dig deeper if you need to, or just shut it off and take a break. We are not meant to live in a place of fear and we absolutely shouldn’t prep from one either.
Take a deep breath, you got this. Remember preparedness is nothing more than planning for the things to come. Prep for most likely not least likely first. Small steps add up to big accomplishments.
I’d love to hear something you learned in 2023, what are you excited and proud of. Nothing is too small!
No video this week as it’s been hard to record with Joe home recovering from his surgery. There will definitely be one next Tuesday! See you here in the comments in the mean time.
