A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, The LUMI Neon Museum proudly joins forces with Pennway Point. The Kansas City Automotive Museum, and other Kansas City organizations to present vintage neon.

Tax deductible contributions not only help preserve and display these historic signs; they also help educate the public about the businesses they promoted, and their contributions to Kansas City commerce.

A classic art form, an industry in decline, a clear vision, many empathetic business owners, experienced neon handlers, industrial-strength resources (trucks, cranes and warehouses) and steady, hands-on volunteers make The LUMI Neon Museum a reality. We’re energized by the opportunity to preserve these roadside icons that literally stopped us in our tracks for much of our lives.

Kansas Citians appreciate art in its many forms, and as our preservation effort unfolds, we’re pleased to affiliate with other like-minded museums, supportive business leaders and individuals.

Kuluva’s

Joe and Sadie Kuluva opened Kuluva’s Department Store in the Armourdale district of Kansas City, Kansas in 1912. Its cursive 1930s neon sign hung there until the Great Flood of 1951. At that point, the family moved their store to higher ground at 833 Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas, and reopened as Kuluva’s Furniture and Appliances, complete with a brand new 1951 sign. The store flourished there until 1991.

Broadway Hardware
Twenty-four-year-old Thomas Dyche and his wife Martha opened their business in 1918 at 311 Westport Road, one of only three businesses east of Broadway at the time.

Able to add numbers in his head, and always dressed in a white long-sleeved shirt, no matter the temperature, Thomas was as much a fixture in his store as the giant rolling ladder and the hand-cranked cash register. In 1973 at age 79, Thomas passed away after having worked six days a week for 55 years with no days off.
