He wasn’t supposed to be king… but history chose him.

Actually, when King Rama II passed away, the person who was originally expected to ascend the throne was
Prince Mongkut.

However, due to various reasons, Krom Muen Jessadabodindra was the one who took the throne, and became King Rama III.

Today, July 21st, marks the anniversary of King Rama III accession to the throne and what he did was very important for Siam Kingdom to survived during Colonial period in the period of King Rama V.
