Sleep is My Waking Passion™ ft. Dr. Alison Kole
You can sleep eleven hours and wake up feeling like you never slept at all.
That's not laziness. It's not a character flaw. It's Idiopathic Hypersomnia, a chronic neurological sleep disorder where the brain's "wake" signal doesn't fire the way it should.
The exhaustion is invisible. The naps don't refresh. The mornings feel like wading through fog (and "sleep drunkenness" is the actual term for it). Because IH is rare and hard to see, so many people wait years to be believed, often mistaken for depression, or just "tired."
This Saturday, June 13, is the 3rd Annual Idiopathic Hypersomnia Day. The theme is Where in the World is Idiopathic Hypersomnia?, a global community, often silent and exhausted, finally raising its voice together.
If you've ever felt unseen in your own tiredness: you're not imagining it, and you're not alone.
🤍 Save this for the days the fog wins.
🤍 Share it with someone who's always tired.
🤍 Follow for more on the sleep disorders no one talks about.
Tomorrow they feel seen. Today, that starts with you.

Sleep is My Waking Passion™ ft. Dr. Alison Kole
The newest episode of Sleep Is My Waking Passion means more to me than I can fully explain.
It’s my first international episode, filmed live in London with a full studio setup, and the first episode since we reached 100,000 subscribers.
But more than that, it feels like the start of a new era for the podcast: more intention, more focus, and a much bigger mission.
In this episode, I sit down with award-winning ENT sleep surgeon Dr. Dr. Ryan Chin Taw Cheong to talk about why sleep apnea is still so underdiagnosed, why CPAP does not work for every patient, when ENT evaluation matters, and what the future of mask-free sleep apnea treatment could look like.
This conversation is exactly where I hoped the podcast would go.
I can’t wait for you to watch it: https://youtu.be/Aqy_O6Cj-SA

Sleep is My Waking Passion™ ft. Dr. Alison Kole
As I make my way back to New Jersey from London, I refreshed the Sleep is My Waking Passion® YouTube channel and saw something I will never forget:
100,000 subscribers.
I am overwhelmed with gratitude.
This milestone feels different from anything I have experienced before.
Becoming a doctor was one of the great honors of my life, but seeing this community grow has shown me how far sleep education can reach beyond the exam room.
Every day, I have the privilege of helping patients understand their sleep, their health, and their quality of life.
Through this platform, that mission has expanded to more than 100,000 people who are choosing to learn, ask questions, and take sleep seriously.
What started as a passion project has become a community — one that has taken me to places, conversations, and opportunities I never could have imagined.
To every subscriber, guest, patient, colleague, and supporter who has been part of this journey: thank you.
Sleep truly is my waking passion, and I am so grateful that 100,000 of you have made it part of yours too.
Here’s to continuing the mission of making sleep health education more accessible, practical, and life-changing.

London called. I answered. ✈️
While recording my first international episode of Sleep Is My Waking Passion™ in London, I was reminded of something many travelers don't realize:
The rules around melatonin can change the moment you land.
In the U.S., melatonin is widely available. In the UK, it's prescription-only. And some of the products marketed for sleep in airports may contain far more than you actually need.
A few takeaways before your next trip:
🌙 Lower doses (1–3mg) often work best for jet lag
🌙 More melatonin is not necessarily better
🌙 Pack it before you fly
🌙 Take it close to your destination bedtime
🌙 Don't assume every product is labeled accurately
The goal isn't to knock you out.
It's to help your body know when it's time to sleep.
Save this post for your next international trip—and share it with someone who's always fighting jet lag.

What if sleep apnea treatment is not just about CPAP?
In this new episode of Sleep Is My Waking Passion™, Dr. Alison Kole sits down with Dr. Audrey Yoon to explore how airway-focused orthodontics may play a role in sleep-disordered breathing.
They discuss how facial growth, palate width, nasal breathing, jaw structure, and airway development may influence obstructive sleep apnea in both children and adults.
This conversation also breaks down red flags parents should watch for, including snoring, mouth breathing, bedwetting, teeth grinding, narrow palates, crossbites, and hyperactivity.
For patients who struggle with CPAP or feel like they are out of options, this episode offers a fascinating look at where sleep medicine, dentistry, and orthodontics are beginning to overlap.

Time is brain.
For Stroke Awareness Month, I’m highlighting a connection we do not talk about enough: sleep and stroke risk.
In my latest Substack, I share my conversation with Dr. Joyce Lee-Iannotti on stroke warning signs, obstructive sleep apnea, and why symptoms like loud snoring, gasping, morning headaches, and persistent fatigue should not be ignored.
Sleep is brain health.

What if “menopause sleep” is actually missed sleep apnea?
In our newest episode of Sleep Is My Waking Passion™, Dr. Alison Kole sits down with Dr. Nancy Collop to talk about why sleep apnea is so often underdiagnosed in women.
Fatigue, insomnia, frequent awakenings, night sweats, morning headaches, and “crappy sleep” are often blamed on aging, hormones, stress, or menopause.
But sometimes, there is more going on.
This conversation breaks down how sleep apnea can look different in women, why “mild” results may not tell the full story, and when poor sleep should prompt a closer look.

What if your exhaustion, brain fog, and low energy are not just stress, but signs of something happening while you sleep?
In this new episode, I’m joined by award-winning filmmaker George T. Nierenberg for powerful conversation about sleep apnea, the isolation many people feel before diagnosis, and the impact untreated sleep issues can have on daily life.
We talk about the film, the patients who documented their own sleep apnea journeys over two years, and why treatment is not about shame or judgment. It is about improving sleep quality, restoring energy, and finding a solution that works for your life.
Because sleep should not just be something you get through.
It should help you feel better in the morning.

Is snoring in children always harmless… or is it something we’re missing?
In this latest episode, I’m sitting down with my dear friend @sleepdrchris to talk about what we’re both seeing more and more:
snoring at night
bedtime meltdowns
trouble focusing during the day
Sometimes it gets written off as normal. Sometimes it’s not.
We get into the red flags of pediatric sleep apnea, why it’s often missed, and what actually matters when it comes to sleep and breathing.
If you’ve ever questioned it, this conversation is worth your time. New episode out now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7QAE...
