Flash Point History

We hear of great people in history all the time. The Caesars, the Elizabeths, the Napoleons, and the Genghis Khans. They may have been enlighten rulers or vile despots; great builders or the destroyers of civilization - but they all shared one thing. They were human, and as such they had hopes, dreams, aspirations, inner demons, and insecurities - like everyone else. These traits affected the course of humanity for better and for worse. Together, they have made us the global society we are today. Flash Point History is dedicated to making history accessible because when we look into the past we discover ourselves.

Flash Point History

Currently on 19 minutes of a 23 minute production - hoping to have it out on Monday / Tuesday.

It always impresses me how having a monopoly on something can change the entire political and economic scene. Goa, in the 16th century, happened to be THE hub of the Arabian horse trade. A commodity that every kingdom and sultanate needed for their armies. By controlling the city, the Portuguese had leverage on everyone.

Flash Point History

The Portuguese defenders of Goa were outnumbered and had been under siege for months in 1512. In late October of 1512 Afonso de Albuquerque arrived with a relief force and quickly deployed his reserves into the city while his navy bombarded enemy positions and cut off the Island of Tiwadi on which Goa was located. Still outnumbered - the Portuguese with their Indian Mercenaries counter attacked. What ensued was a harrowing battle that left many dead on both sides.

I'm coming up to the half way mark in video production for the next video! Here is a scene from it; In 1512 Afonso de Albuquerque returned to India to find it a complete mess. Many had though he had died in Malacca and he had to deal with malcontents in his own ranks. The army and navy had become weak - What's worse, the Sultan of Bijapur had returned to retake Goa with a massive army.

Flash Point History

It was sad to create this sequence. The mighty Flor de la Mar goes down in a storm on Nov 20 1511. The pride of the Portuguese Navy died a legend. The ship was carrying a vast treasure taken from Malacca. Its current estimated value is $2.6 Billion and remains there near Timia Point off the northern coast of Sumatra to this day. Anyone wanna join me for a treasure hunt?
