One part of sermon preparation that most people never see is the work of moving from the structure of the biblical text to a sermon outline.
The picture below is my syntactical division of Ephesians 6:1–3.
SYNTACTICAL OUTLINE
1. Children, obey your parents
* A. “in the Lord”
* B. “for this is right”
2. HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER
“which is the first commandment with a promise”
* A. “SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU”
* B. “AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG IN THE LAND.”
From there, I work toward a sermon outline that follows the argument of the text while making it easier to understand and remember.
SERMON OUTLINE
Why should believing children obey their parents?
1. Because It Is Right — v. 1
2. Because God Commands It — v. 2
3. Because God Attaches Blessing to It — vv. 2–3
The goal is not to impose an outline on Scripture, but to let the structure and argument of the text shape the sermon.

Deuteronomy 6:4–9 breaks naturally into two parts: the heart and the practice of biblical parenting.
We’ve spent two Sundays on the heart. This Sunday we move into the practice of biblical parenting and ask: What does it actually look like to make God’s Word part of the everyday life of your home?
