Just to remind everyone… we are in OCTOBER. The month of ghouls… the month of pumpkins and witches and not having to dust because finally the cobwebs give ‘ambience’.

So why oh why, when I’m flicking through the radio stations, do I find not ONE but TWO dedicated Christmas channels?

Erm, hello Mr & Mrs Ofcom… can we please sort this out?

And whilst we’re waiting for that (and as a small act of rebellion), may I suggest that together we create a playlist for our imaginary Halloween radio station…

Behind the magic… 🍂

Thanks to everyone who has watched the episode so far—I hope you enjoyed the first stop on the Halloween trail!

We arrived in the New Forest after about five hours of driving and were delighted to discover, in true British fashion, traffic cones and roadworks everywhere 😆

Not quite the aesthetic I was hoping for, but hey ho—we’re not Steven Spielberg. We can’t make entire towns look how we want for a video.

I did muse over how they could at least have painted the cones black to resemble witches’ hats, but alas… health and safety and all that.

Our time in Burley was short but sweet. It’s only a small village, but it’s managed to pack in plenty of witchy shops, which were great fun to explore. A quick drink in the tearoom, a good roam around the forest, and then we were on our way, hoping to reach Salisbury before dark.

It was wonderful to finally visit the place Sybil Leek once called home. I only wish I could have met her in my own lifetime.

As I mentioned on last night’s live, I’ve recently seen quite a few creators posting about their YouTube channels being taken down without warning, for various reasons, and the work it’s taken to get them back.

Some of you will remember that I lost my first channel completely out of the blue. I never got to the bottom of why, and I never got it back. Thankfully, some viewers also followed me on other social platforms, so I could keep them updated rather than just disappearing!

Heaven forbid it happens again, but if it ever does, that’s where I’ll be keeping everybody in the loop.

Another milestone 🤘🖤
Thank you to everyone who’s subscribed, watched, commented or come along for a wander. And if you’re new here 👋 Here are five things you might not know about me and the channel:

1. Wanderlust means a desire to wander. This channel began with travel videos, but somewhere along the way I started following the stories, history and curious little finds I came across 🖤

2. I’ve no background in filmmaking. I teach myself along the way....although I did spend years working in web design and running social media channels for other companies. It turns out some of those skills came in handy!

3. My setup is still pretty basic: I film on my phone and edit on my laptop. I’m learning as I go, hiccups and all. As they say, 'calm seas never made a seasoned sailor'

4. I’m not a historian or a teacher (I'm not sensible enought for that) what I AM is a unapologetic weirdo who loves books, ghosts, stories, old movies, music, dogs, graveyard walks and nature.
Amongst all that I seem to find stories and that's what I share on the channel.

5. I have no idea what I’m doing half the time. I’m winging it and hoping for the best! Some days I doubt myself and wonder where this is all heading. Then a day like today comes along, and 41,000 of you make me feel I must be doing something right.

So while I’m enjoying it, and you are too, I’ll keep following the rabbit holes, uncovering stories and wandering into the darker corners of history.

Ahoy, me hearties! 🏴‍☠️

For those who have already joined me on our swashbuckling adventure, I hope you’ve recovered from the seasickness! Thank you for watching and for all your lovely comments so far.

Some of you will know that we filmed this during our anniversary week in Madeira — because that’s what you sign up for when you marry a story-seeking history geek who can’t visit anywhere without digging into its darker past. Forget lounging beside the pool; poor Adi found himself exploring museums, wandering around fortresses and setting sail aboard a replica ship instead! 😂

Pirate life:
Saw a real shark ✔️
Tried the sugarcane rum — ✔️… (but nearly died)
Bought a bottle of the ships Madeiran wine — ✔️ (That one doesn’t try to kill you; it’s actually rather nice)
Explored a fortress and pretended to shoot pirates ✔️
Still found time for lovely meals and anniversary celebrations ✔️

If you find yourself on the island and love your grub I can highly recommend the bolo do caco (round bread) with garlic butter & pork marinated in white wine AND the Espetada (thick chunks of steak on a skewer with garlic and salt) just insane flavours 👌
