Port Arthur, Duluth & Western Railway and more

Welcome to my channel about the Port Arthur, Duluth & Western Railway. Most of the videos posted here are from my explorations along the former right of way, both in Ontario and Minnesota. My hikes also take me to the sites of industries related to the PAD&W such as mining or logging. I've also branched out and begun exploring two other abandoned rail lines in the area, the Canadian Northern Railway Long Lake and Nipigon Subdivisions (CN Dorion/Kinghorn Subdivisions) and Grand Trunk Pacific Lake Superior Division (later CN Graham Subdivision).

You'll find a few other videos here as well, mostly of sports and travel. Most videos are published under my moniker, "Angry Irish Productions."

Happy New Year!

So, unfortunately we have come to the end of the exploration videos that were recorded in the fall. Hopefully you enjoyed all of the hikes that Luna and I did. To date, we've documented the GTP/Graham Subdivision as far as Percy's Bay on Mattawa Lake, just south of Unaka Station.

Explorations will resume in the spring with a revisit of the Quorn area and the completion of the section between Percy's Bay and Highway 599.

Stay tuned!

Well, that's a wrap on the spring hiking season.

In total, I did 4.5 hikes this spring (I had to redo a chunk of one because of the weather) and have already biked 153km. If things go to plan and the weather cooperates, I hope to push another 53 miles west to Highway 599 south of Silver Dollar in the fall. I'll be out a few times this summer to explore the grade in those areas to prepare for the fall hikes. Stay tuned for those updates.

The first group of 7 videos have been posted and the next group will be out on Monday. There are still 36 videos to come, including 10 I did last fall.

Hiking season is upon us again.

A big thank you for your support, and a special shout out to all of the new subscribers. We just recent passed the 1000 follower threshold, which is great for such a niche channel like this one.

Most of my attention this year is again going to be focused on the Grand Trunk/Graham Subdivision. With an early start and some great fall weather last year, I was able to cover almost everything from Thunder Bay to just east of Raith (yellow arrows). I also did the piece around Linko Station (green to red arrows), though I do need to go back and add some footage due to some new information.

The plan for this year is to hopefully cover from around Raith and then everything from west of Linko to Highway 599 (red to pink arrows). That's a lot of ground, about 80 miles of line. Most of that will be done in the fall, when hopefully the ground is drier. With any luck I can get that piece around Raith and from Linko to Larson (and maybe more) done over the next several weeks.

Stay tuned for all the updates!

As we move into spring, hiking season is (hopefully) just around the corner. I will be posting more about my plans for 2025 soon.
In the meantime, I had the privilege to have my work highlighted on CBC News. I huge thank you goes out to ‪@WarrenTheReporter‬ for taking the time to chat with me. If you follow the channel, you recognize some of the videos in the clip. You can check it out here:

Great video by @WarrenTheReporter on the alphabetical naming pattern used by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, including that of the Lake Superior Division/Branch built here in northwestern Ontario from Fort William (Thunder Bay) to Superior Junction. You might see some footage from someone familiar, even some that hasn't been posted yet!
Check it out below and head over to his channel for some other great content.

This week saw the last significant hike of 2024. It has been a very busy fall and thankfully Mother Nature cooperated with some mostly ideal conditions and unusually dry weather.
There will many videos dropping in the near future of all of these recent explorations.

Another week, another scouting mission on the former Grand Trunk Pacific Lake Superior Division/CN Graham Subdivision. This 24 mile drive took me from just south of Mack Station west past Knowlton/Graham to Oscar Station.
With any luck these areas will be documented in the video series next year.

Happy July! A special welcome to all the new subscribers.

It is the off-season for explorations, but it doesn't mean the work stops.
On July 3rd I did a 50 mile driving trek on the Grand Trunk Pacific/CN Graham Sub from Flett to Mack to scout for future hikes (it is always easier when you've been through an area before). With any luck, I'll be back out this week for another recce from Mack to past Graham.

It has been a busy hiking season that started very early this year due to a mild winter. I've been able to get out on not one, but two former rail lines in the area.
Beginning tomorrow there will be an episode of videos dropping every week from now until the beginning of August. Hopefully you enjoy all of these explorations!

Just wanted to say a big thank you to all the channel subscribers, especially the many who have joined recently. Your support is greatly appreciated.

With the lack of snow we had this winter and the warm temperatures, hiking season will be coming around sooner than later. I have quite a few explorations planned and hope to have many new videos up on the channel. Some of these will be updates to ones I have done before, so the pictures will give you an idea of what is on tap!
