In this portrait, young aristocrat Charles Collyer is elegantly dressed in an Anglo-styled green waistcoat, trimmed with narrow gold metallic galloon. The 1760s witnessed a shift in men’s formal daywear toward more muted colors and refined designs, with the Anglo-style suit becoming increasingly popular. His linen shirt and matching breeches underscore his fashion sense and high social status, and you can also see that he's holding a hot. (not sure but probably a three-cornered hat)
The cricket bat he holds emphasizes not just participation in the sport, but the cultivation of gentlemanly virtues—discipline, honor, and teamwork—values essential in elite education. Interestingly, this bat is from the second generation of cricket bats, emerging around 1750. It marks the transition from the earlier, hockey-stick-like design toward the flatter and wider bottom we recognize today, symbolizing the sport's shift from rural origins to its embrace by urban elite.
