Pandit Birju Maharaj (1938 - 2022) was an Indian dancer, singer, composer, and guru who was a master of the classical dance form Kathak. He was a member of the Lucknow Kalka-Bindadin gharana, a community of musicians who share a distinctive musical style.
Life:
Born Brijmohan Nath Mishra in Lucknow, India on February 4, 1938
Died in New Delhi on January 16, 2022
Trained under his father, Acchan Maharaj, and uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj
Performed for the first time at age seven
Taught at Sangeet Bharti, Bharatiya Kala Kendra, and Kathak Kendra
Opened his own dance school, Kalashram, in Delhi after retiring from teaching in 1998
Achievements:
Recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honor, in 1986
Received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award
Received the Kalidas Samman
Received the National Film Award for choreography in 2012 for the film Vishwaroopam
Received the Lata Mangeshkar Puraskaar in 2002
