Would you put an expelled mouthpiece directly back into your own mouth without rinsing it?

Would you put it into your son’s or daughter’s mouth?

The answer is obvious.

Some referees are placing expelled mouthpieces directly back into a boxer’s mouth, apparently to save time. This is unsanitary, improper, and unnecessary.

The correct procedure is simple:

Wait for the safe lull.

Command “Time!”

Retrieve the mouthpiece.

Give it to the Chief Second for rinsing and reinsertion.

The referee never reinserts it.

🥊 NEW TRAINING VIDEO

Should the referee gait test remain part of professional boxing?

After reviewing actual knockdown sequences, current referee mechanics, and the existing eight-count and ten-count rules, I believe this procedure deserves another look.

This presentation examines:

✅ The accepted knockdown procedure
✅ The referee's ongoing evaluation
✅ The added time created by the gait test
✅ Lack of a uniform standard
✅ Safety and fairness for both boxers

This is not a criticism of referees who use the procedure. The discussion is about whether the procedure itself remains necessary.

I welcome respectful discussion from officials, physicians, trainers, promoters, commissions, and boxers.

This presentation builds on my earlier Knockdown Training videos, which explain the complete knockdown procedure before examining the added gait test.

REFEREE PATIENCE UNDER PRESSURE
De La Hoya vs. Quartey — Round 12

I examine the referee’s patience, focus, and positioning during the dramatic final round of Oscar De La Hoya vs. Ike Quartey.

Quartey was hurt, tired, and under heavy attack—but he continued to respond, defend himself, and fight back.

Would you have allowed the bout to continue, or would you have stopped it?

Let's go back more than 30 years and revisit Bowe vs. Mathis from a referee’s perspective.

This is not about blame. It is about referee judgment, proper position, replay review, and what can be learned from a hard moment involving a highly respected referee.

The bout, the vicious blow, and what followed left behind a true what-if question that remains a significant moment in boxing history.

What do you think? Once a referee clearly sees a boxer hit while down, what should follow?

Some of the most difficult moments in refereeing often happen in just a few seconds.

Late-round situations, knockdowns, restarts, positioning, and transitions all require awareness, composure, timing, and control.

These situations may look simple from outside the ring, but small details can affect safety, fairness, and how decisions are understood.
