The first railway on Indian sub-continent ran over a stretch of 21 miles from Bombay to Thane on 16 April 1853. The idea of a railway to connect Bombay with Thane, Kalyan and with the Thai and Bhore Ghats inclines first occurred to George Clark, the Chief Engineer of the Bombay Government, during a visit to Bhandup in 1843. The first passenger train steamed out of Howrah station destined for Hooghly, a distance of 24 miles, on 15 August 1854. In South, the first line was opened on 1 July 1856 by the Madras Railway Company. It ran between Veyasarpandy and Walajah Road (Arcot), a distance of 63 miles. In the North, a length of 119 miles of line was laid from Allahabad to Kanpur on 3 March 1859.

Since the day NFR got electrified, I totally quit taking trains to North Bengal and opted for buses instead. But on this one off case, I booked tickets on Kanchan Kanya Express to enjoy the diesel run. And NFR greeted me with a few diesel hauled freights amidst plethora of bogus E-loco trains.

Seen here is a palindrome GE ROZA WDG-4G 49094 racing past at high speed with a BCNA Freight train.

On a cold winter morning, the 02804 Covid Special KRIYA YOGA Express (Howrah - Ranchi) arrives at Ranchi Junction almost 20 minutes ahead of schedule.

While the actual 18615 KRIYA YOGA Express (Howrah - Ranchi - Hatia) takes 8+ hours to cover the Howrah Ranchi distance with 6 intermediate halts, the Superfast Clone version covered the same in 7.5 hours with just 3 halts enroute. The COVID Special had the opportunity to be speeded up even further, as we reached Tatanagar Jn. 20 minutes before time, Muri Jn. 45 minutes before time, and Ranchi Junction 20 minutes before time.
