To me, struggle love, is when a man chooses to put you through things because of his shortcomings or lack of inner work. People are pushing this narrative that Annie and Smoke had a modernized “struggle love” relationship which to me is comparing oranges to apples. We are talking about a full figure, a brown hue black woman who lived in the deep south of Mississippi in 1932, and Smoke a World War I veteran. What kind of love were they supposed to have during the Jim Crow era? Smoke wasn’t a bum he was a veteran with dreams of entrepreneurship. Smoke had his ways but it will never compare to the Ku Klux Klan which had every intent to come back and wipe them out. Their love if anything was complicated because of the adversity and challenges, they both individually faced putting a major strain on their relationship. They also lost a child together while facing the difficult challenges, they were both under. I hope black women heal because their love story does not have to be yours. There is no need to latch yourself on to their love story. We live in different times of course you should want more for yourself. We are collectively under different circumstances and we have access to way more resources. We should consider the nuances before we throw negativity on a film that was supposed to empower us and showcase our resilience. ✨
