When WSJ. Magazine came to me with this cover opportunity, I wasn’t really sure how we’d be able to make it happen…the Olympic season was about to kick off and it was already a busy time. It was the women’s fashion issue, though. Of course I couldn’t say no. The team made it happen within the constraints of a tight schedule after the World Cup kickoff in Sölden, and they were so thoughtful throughout the process. Thank you to Edward Bowleg—one of the best and most creative stylists I’ve ever worked with.
It was a beautiful day in the Ötztal Valley, and the landscape was breathtaking. Jason spoke with people close to me for this piece…from my brother to my fiancé and my physio. He spoke with people whom I admire deeply—Roger Federer and Simone Biles included. And, I love how it turned out.
As I said in the piece, I’ve had three Olympics and three wildly different experiences. Every experience has helped me grow, so from a personal perspective, nothing’s ever been negative. From a public perspective, it’s different. You’d love to grow and have the whole world be proud of you. But often, your biggest growth moments are when the world is actually kind of tearing you down. And that can be hard to sort of reconcile. As for medals at the Olympics—I’m the first to admit that I’m not a sure thing.
A special shoutout to the farmer who brought over his goats (which I honestly thought were sheep😅)…they were so cute.
To all of the people in my corner (and there are so many of you): thank you for all of your support in this journey. I wouldn’t be able to do any of it without you.
