This morning I was in my daily reading, and one of the books I’m reading through right now is Joshua. I had just finished reading Deuteronomy and how God commissioned Joshua to lead the Israelites into the land He had promised to them through Abraham. God informed Moses that the children of Israel would not keep the Law of the Covenant they made with Him, and towards the end of his last book, the Song of Moses would be an indictment of the Nation of Israel.

In chapters 16 through 19 of the book of Joshua, after the Israelites had subdued the land under his leadership, the land was divided by tribes, twelve tribes in all. God instructed Moses that when the Israelites were to enter the land, they were to wipe out everyone, men, women, and children.

Back in Genesis, Joseph was informed after saving Egypt from a dreadful famine and sending for his father Jacob to come down from the land of Canaan that they would be in Egypt for the next four hundred years. And when God raised Moses to lead them to the land promised to their fathers, it would be another 80 years before they entered the land as a nation.

Why did God want them to wipe out every man and woman, child, in the land of Canaan? And why did it take 480 years to enter it?

The Canaanites living during the time of Abraham were immersed in idolatrous practices that included child sacrifice, witchcraft, consulting with mediums, spiritists, consulting with the dead, and sexual immorality. These practices affected every institution of society, including the family and the upbringing of their children.

Think of it. If you were living during this time in the land of Canaan and were being raised by your parents, then it may have been natural for you to accept the sacrifice of another child to a Canaanite god. Just because you’re young doesn’t make you innocent.

And now, my thoughts on why it took 480 years for Israel to enter the promised land. God chose Abraham and promised to make him into a great nation. That promise was passed down to Isaac and then to Jacob, whose name God changed to Israel. Abraham was informed that his descendants would spend 400 years enslaved in Egypt, but God would deliver them out of slavery with a mighty hand.

Seventy people went down into Egypt during the famine with Jacob, including all twelve of his sons, and for 400 years they were enslaved; however, there was an entire nation that was formed. So I see this cultivation process that happened when they were enslaved.

Another reason is that the sins of the Canaanites had not reached their fruition. God gives everyone, including nations, a time to repent, and then after that there’s judgment.

There’s a
Threshold to be crossed that is very high. The Canaanites have reached that threshold, and they were not turning back from the sins they had been committing for generations. During this time in history, God had raised a nation to bring judgment on all the nations living in the land of Canaan. Think about that for a moment.

That brings me back to Joshua chapters 16 through 19. In these chapters, we learn that the children of Israel did not fully wipe out the Canaanites in the land. Of the tribe of Manasseh, we learn in chapter 17, verse 13: “and then it happened, when the children of Israel grew strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.” Also, we read in verse 16 that the tribe of Manasseh was speaking to Joshua, saying, “ The mountain country is not enough for all the Canaanites who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both those who are in Beth Shean and its towns and those who are in the valley of Jezreel.” What happened to their trust in God?

The reason I mention this is that, as you read a few chapters earlier, even though this is a new generation, they had just crossed the Jordan River on dry ground just like the generation before had crossed the Red Sea, and destroyed a few cities while experiencing God’s hand in all of it. The Canaanites had scouts and spies everywhere, and so Rahab, a prostitute, informs the two spies Joshua sends to scout out the land; she tells them that everyone is fearful because of what God has done for the Israelites. Then the walls of Jericho caved in. They had forgotten about God.

Even after being subdued, the Canaanites continued with their sinful practices of idolatry and eventually became a snare to the children of Israel. They were also a representative of sin in our lives.

It may have taken some time; however, Israel eventually found itself practicing the same idolatry of the Canaanites and to a deeper level of depravity than all the nations around them. God eventually had to have them exiled from the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

On the issue of sin in my life, it’s important to realize its consequences and how it becomes a snare in my relationship with God. Yes, I’m under grace through my Lord Jesus Christ, but sin still has a price.

That’s why in Deuteronomy, Moses instructed the children of Israel, ‘that you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your soul.” For me, that means to be as near to God as possible every day of my life.

I feel that Dawn of The Millennial is an apocalyptic tale of seven souls sharing the experiences as they witness the Return of Christ. I’m not sure if this is a new concept but I think it would be good once it’s in production.
