The goal: To take common sense about the Bible and make it rigorous.

I'm an analytic philosopher, specializing in theory of knowledge. I've published widely in both classical and formal epistemology. On this channel I'm applying my work in the theory of knowledge to the books of the Bible, especially the Gospels, and to apologetics, the defense of Christianity. My aim is to bring a combination of scholarly rigor and common sense to these topics, providing the skeptic with well-considered reasons to accept Christianity and the believer with well-argued ways to defend it.

My books in New Testament so far are Hidden in Plain View, The Mirror or the Mask, and The Eye of the Beholder. I am also publishing articles in New Testament journals and continuing to work in philosophy and publish in philosophy journals.

Soli Deo gloria.

I want to let all my subscribers know that yesterday's video was the first in a short series I'll be doing on inerrancy and how my own views and the literary device views relate to it. This is a topic that I know interests people, and I encourage you to watch and share the videos if you're interested. The rough plan for the series is as follows: Yesterday's video was on different definitions of inerrancy and how these intersect with the reportage model and the compositional device views that I oppose. Next week's will answer an attempted tu quoque about reliability and my own errancy position. The following week will be about the healing of the centurion's servant and how this acts as a bridge for some people from traditional inerrancy to compositional device views. And I think the next week's video after that will be on "Why I am not an inerrantist." That will probably be the last in the series.

Please understand that I don't have a goal here to be a "missionary" for errancy! I'd much rather be a "missionary" for reliability. But it is probably not possible and maybe not even desirable just to tell people that they shouldn't care about a topic that they obviously do care about a lot, and inerrancy is just such a topic within the conservative Christian world and even among skeptics. Given that, I think it's better to address it directly.

In general, I urge you to share videos from this channel and to suggest to others that they subscribe and sign up for notifications. I think the content on this channel can be very helpful.

This week there won't be a new video. I encourage you to browse the many videos on the site and get acquainted with them. If you're interested, you can start with the series that kicked off this channel--the response series on supposed "compositional devices" in the Gospels. I've added a couple of interviews and so forth to that playlist; the original videos are numbered and in order. (And thanks again to Emmanuel Fellowship church for helping to make those professional.)

Or if you're interested you could check out my two-part interview with inerrantist Dr. Phil Fernandes on the topic of inerrancy and how it relates to the compositional device views:

Or check out my friend Jonathan McLatchie's excellent responses to Bart Ehrman on biblical contradictions:

Next week I hope to produce a new video in which I recap on "spotlighting" and "paraphrase" and whether these concepts and the occurrence of things that could be called by these names in the Gospels support the Greco-Roman compositional device view. (Spoiler, it doesn't.) This is a topic that long-standing readers and viewers will already be familiar with, and that I dealt with in my video series last summer, but it may be new to newer viewers. Unfortunately, misconceptions on these ideas continue to circulate, so it's useful to continue addressing them.

Thanks for being subscribers to the Lydia McGrew Youtube channel, where we're making common sense rigorous!

Hey, subscribers, I just found out that if you actually want to get notifications about the channels you've subscribed to, you may have to go to "subscriptions" and click on the gear icon in the upper right of the box that opens, then click the gear to go to "settings," and click to toggle the switch to turn on notifications on "subscriptions." Wouldn't you think that this would happen automatically when you've gone to all the trouble to hit the bell to turn on notifications about a channel you're subscribed to? In a way I'm glad that YT isn't spamming people with unwanted notifications, but still...Seems like it shouldn't be this hard to get notifications about the channels you wanted to get them from. So, *anyway*, if you haven't been getting notifications about my videos each week, and you would like to, be sure to check your notification settings!

My apologies concerning the privacy setting of the most recent video. I am using livestream to create, with the intention of setting the videos to public after I've had the chance to add a proper thumbnail and shownotes. In this case I forgot to set the privacy setting *before* livestreaming. Hence you got a notification and then found the video private. I will be making it public soon. Apologies again!

Thanks to my fans for "unlocking" Community Posts by helping me reach 1000 subscribers (and counting)! I'm working mentally on my next video, which will be about epistemic routing and the raising of the saints passage in Matthew 27. Stay tuned!
