Will Thane Be Ready Before the Monsoon Arrives? TMC Says 80% Drain Cleaning Work Is Complete
As the monsoon clouds begin gathering over Thane, a crucial question remains — is the city truly prepared to handle heavy rainfall and prevent flooding?
According to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), nearly 80% of the city's drain desilting work has been completed, with officials assuring that the remaining work will be finished by June 5.
During a review meeting, Additional Municipal Commissioner Prashant Rode directed officials to focus particularly on sensitive areas such as Mumbra and Diva, where drainage challenges have often been a concern during the rainy season.
But the real test is yet to come. Will the cleaned drains be enough to prevent waterlogging? Will ongoing projects such as the Coastal Road and Bullet Train works create any bottlenecks for rainwater flow?
To strengthen preparedness, TMC has activated emergency control rooms at the headquarters as well as at all ward offices. Officials have also been instructed to inspect cattle sheds, low-lying areas, culverts, and major infrastructure projects to ensure there are no obstructions to water flow.
With just days left before the monsoon intensifies, citizens will be watching closely. Will this year's preparations translate into flood-free roads and smoother commutes, or will the rains expose gaps in the system once again? Only the monsoon will provide the answer.

Pune, March 18, 2026: A major road accident on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway near Khopoli on Wednesday resulted in three fatalities and left several others injured.
The incident occurred on the Mumbai-bound stretch near a tunnel, where four to five vehicles reportedly collided, causing significant damage and disruption.
