Adi Shankaracharya established four peeths in the four corners of India. 2500 years ago, on the auspicious tenth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Vasisakh, Bhagvatpada Adi Shankaracharya established the eastern monastery associated with Rigveda called “Poorvamnaya Sri Govardhan Math-Bhogavardhan Peetham”. Acharya Padmapada was ceremoniously installed as the first Sankaracharya of Govardhan Math.

Kshatriya Raja Danda ~ Indispensable for the Functioning of Dharma
========================

Dharma can flourish only when it is protected by an able Kshatriya king whose Raja danda is firm and effective. In the absence of such a capable and righteous authority, people naturally drift into acting according to their own whims, and any real sense of order begins to collapse.

Below are two instances from our Itihasas that underscore the indispensable role of a Kshatriya king in ensuring the proper functioning of dharma.

1. Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda, Chapter 67

These words were spoken by the Brahmana ministers of Ayodhya after the passing of King Dasharatha. At that time, Rama and Lakshmana were in the forest, while Bharata and Shatrughna were away at their maternal home. With no ruler on the throne, the Brahmanas feared that chaos would soon arise if a king was not promptly anointed. Among their concerns was the following:

“In a kingdom without a king, even Brahmanas who are dedicated to sacrifice, self-controlled, and firm in their vows cease to perform their sacrificial duties.”

Thus, a dharma-nishtha King’s presence is necessary to ensure that the Brahmanas, even the well informed ones, show no negligence in observing their Dharma.

2. Mahabharata, Adi Parva, Chapter 41 (Dakshinatya Patha)

The context here is quite interesting. Maharshi Shameeka was absorbed in deep meditation in his hermitage when King Parikshit arrived, searching for a deer he had wounded during a hunt. Parikshit asked the Maharshi about the deer’s whereabouts, but received no response because the Maharshi was immersed in tapas. Angered, Parikshit placed a dead snake on the Maharshi’s shoulder and left.

When the Maharshi’s son saw this insult, he became enraged and cursed Parikshit. Upon learning of the curse, Maharshi Shameeka rebuked his son, explaining that he should never have cursed the king, by whose protection all people are able to perform their dharma. Quoting Manu, he explained a King equals ten Shrotriya Brahmanas!

“My son, without a king we cannot practise dharma to our content. We live protected by kings who uphold dharma. We are able to perform our Dharma abundantly only because of them, and therefore a king should always be forgiven.”

He further states:

“By the king dharma is established, and from dharma heaven is established. All sacrificial acts depend upon the king, and through sacrifice the gods are sustained.
From the gods comes rain; from rain arise the plants; and from plants humans receive the nourishment that supports their welfare. The ruling King is thus the sustainer of the Humans. Manu has declared that a king is equal to ten learned Brahmanas.”

Such is the central importance of a Kshatriya king in sustaining dharma. This is precisely what is lacking in the present age. Without firm and righteous authority, people interpret and practise “dharma” according to their personal desires. In such times, dharma survives only through the dedication of a few steadfast individuals who uphold their duties regardless of circumstance, and above all through the grace of Bhagavan.
