Something was released on this day, 10/6/69, and to my ears made George Harrison in every way an equal to Lennon and McCartney in the songwriting department. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was a huge step forward and George had written some great songs up to this point, but “Something” was one of those songs that was immediately more than a pop song. It was at once accessible to everyone but also contained the essence of the person who put the song on paper. When Frank Sinatra, James Brown, Elvis Presley, and Ray Charles all record their own version of the song, I think you can say he did all right.
