Before submitting your resume for the job, consider these tips.

1) Understand the employer's mission and values to understand what type of candidates would fit into their culture. For example, Amazon did a great job highlighting its 16 Leadership Principles and even included what the interview process entails to help prepare its applicants.

2) Create a resume relevant to the role, especially under "Basic and Preferred Qualifications." Highlight your large-scale accomplishments, especially with top companies.

3) 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆. Whom do you know in your 1st-degree connection who is a current or former employee with the company you are interested in landing a role?

In 2025, whether to include a cover letter when applying for a job will largely depend on the company, the role, and the structure of the application process.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:

Role-Specific Applications: For senior, leadership, or specialized roles, a cover letter can differentiate you by showcasing your passion, alignment with the company mission, and relevant experiences.

A cover letter helps frame your story positively if you're changing industries, explaining a gap, or pivoting your career.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿:

☝ If the job application uses an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) that doesn't include space for a cover letter or doesn't mention one.

☝ Resume Fit: When your resume strongly aligns with the job description and doesn't need additional explanation, skipping the cover letter may not harm your chances.

𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱:

➡️ Many companies now use AI tools to scan applications focusing on resume content rather than cover letters.

➡️ A cover letter still represents effort and enthusiasm for smaller companies or roles requiring strong communication skills.

If the role excites you and you have the opportunity to personalize your application, investing time in a cover letter is worth it.
