I never think dressing up is a silly thing - but I didn’t always feel this way.

I used to spend so much of my time looking after my family that I slowly stopped doing anything for myself. I kept beautiful sarees inside the wardrobe, left jewellery in its box and kept saying, “maybe another day”.

I think my love for sarees began long before I even understood what they meant.

As a little girl, I would quietly take my mother’s sarees, wrap them around myself in the most messy, childish way, and stand in front of the mirror feeling so grown up. The pleats would never stay in place, the pallu would trail behind me, and the saree would be far too big… but in my mind, I looked exactly like my mother.

Back then, all I wanted was to grow up quickly, so that one day I could wear every saree in her wardrobe properly. I loved the way she looked in them - graceful, confident and so beautifully herself. Sarees were never just clothes to me. They were a part of her, our home and so many memories from my childhood.

Even today, every time I drape a saree, that little girl in me comes alive again.

Maybe that is why sarees will always be so close to my heart. They carry our mothers, our celebrations and a little piece of who we are.

And perhaps Narmi Boutique is my way of passing that feeling on - one beautiful saree and one memory at a time.
