FUN FACT: Did you know the M/V Roger Blough was originally going to be a thousand footer? That’s right! We would’ve had 14 thousand footers!
Her construction lasted from 1968 to 1971, because she was so large at the time. A week before her scheduled launch, there was a fire that started, which killed 4 workers. After this had happened, US Steel decided to shorten her to a shorter, but acceptable 858’ length. The fire was probably not the exact reason for this, I’m not sure.
The Blough served for 50 years proudly, until in 2022, where yet another fire broke out, but this was much more severe. An estimated 100 million dollars of damage were discovered. It is believed that the fire started from the repeated removal and reinstallation of the furnace's burner that led to a spark and to the failure in its mounting coupling. This happened while she was unloading coal one day, and thankfully, it was contained fairly quickly and no other lakers were lost. There is no word on whether she’ll be scrapped or not, but right now, she is in long term layup in Conneaut, Ohio.
