I study and make content about languages, primarily Old English and Latin. My series 'Word Æfter Cwæð' brings in for discussion various experts on fields relating to early medieval England, and has featured guests such as R.D. Fulk, Don Ringe, Geoffrey Russom, and Jackson Crawford.

Only a week left to sign up for the Old English poetry course this June!
www.habesnelac.com/courses/p/su26-gs-oen-poetry
We’ll be closely reading a few short poems, talking over their interpretation both literally and artistically, and learning the ropes of Old English meter.
I hope to see you there!

I already own pretty much all of the books I covered in the new Tolkien reading list video, but I had FOMO, so I went on my own book-buying spree in solidarity. These four were all used by Tolkien as textbooks at Leeds. I was pleasantly surprised at how cheap the used copies were (all $5-15 for me); let me know if you decide to get any yourself!

Old English Poetry course this June!
We'll be closely reading various short poems such as Deor and the Finnsburg Fragment, talking about Old English meter, the Old English legendary material, and poetic interpretation. The course will be geared towards people who can read/translate some Old English, but might feel intimidated by poetry.
That said, anyone is welcome to join. We will meet for four two-hour sessions, on the four Saturdays in June. Check us out!

If you haven’t gotten a chance to check out my recent video on women in Beowulf, you can do so here: https://youtu.be/APL5UkIYHTc?si=PChfk...
It’s a truly fascinating subject (especially our most prominent figure, Wealhþeow), which has occupied notable scholars like Grimm, Tolkien, and Shippey, for hundreds of years. Most recently, Thijs Porck has made an intriguing connection which I discuss at the end… did Wealhþeow orchestrate Beowulf’s death??
Anyway, enjoy!

Unbelievably, a new version of Cædmon’s hymn has just been found in Rome, dating to the beginning of the 9th century (less than 100 yrs after the Eccl. History was first written).
It’s probably the third-oldest version we have, and the oldest which includes a different reading in line 5b, coming out in West Saxon as “eorðan bearnum”. Most scholars thought this was a late variant, but now we know it was very, very early!

Salvete socii! I'll be going live playing video games in Latin with @latinitasanimicausa and @corradomrusso around 6pm EST tomorrow on Andrew's channel here: youtube.com/@latinitasanimicausa/streams
You can catch us on Twitch, Youtube, or Instagram: linktr.ee/latinitasanimicausa
Not sure yet what we'll be playing, but whatever it is we'll be speaking entirely in Latin. If you're interested in improving your comprehension or just watching some fun antics in Classical Latin, it would be great to see you there!
