Meta Launches Camera-Free Smart Glasses as Privacy Fears Grow.

Menlo Park, Calif, October 15th, 2026, Meta the company led by Mark Zuckerberg, has released smart glasses with no camera. The launch comes as regulators and retailers in Europe, push back against its camera-equipped models.

Background September 17, 2025, a year ago Zuckerberg showed off Meta's first glasses with a built-in screen. They cost $799 and are controlled by a wristband that detects small hand gestures.

September 23rd, 2026, At its connect conference, Meta announced the Ray-Ban Meta Audio, its first camera-free AI glasses. They are audio-only, so wearers can play music, and podcast, take calls, translate speech, and talk to Meta's AI Assistant, Muse. Meta designed them to answer criticism that camera glasses can be used maliciously. Some people had nicknamed those models "pervert glasses."

Early October 2026, Dutch chain Hans Anders stopped selling Meta's smart glasses in the Netherlands and Belgium indefinitely, citing privacy concerns. Around the same time, Norway introduced a temporary ban on smart glasses in sensitive public places such as parks, museums, schools and playgrounds.

October 13th, 2026, the new glasses went on sale. They start at $349, weigh 43 grams, last up to 12 hours per charge, and work with iPhones and Android phones. Engadgets review scored them 8.5 out of 10. The same day, a deadline passed for Meta to respond to a Dutch advocacy group. The group, Offlimits had asked Meta to talk about a solution. Meta kept selling the glasses instead.

October 14th, 2026, Offlimits announced it is taking Meta to court to stop sales of its AI glasses in the Netherlands.

Gizmodo reported that a Reddit thread suggests Meta's glasses may have recorded conversations that did not include the "Hey Meta" wake phrase. That claim comes from the owner's posts, and Meta has not confirmed it.

What it means, the audio-only glasses could appeal to people who want hands-free music and calls without worrying about being filmed. The camera models, though, now face legal and public pressure.
