Thought I'd kick off this year with a daily art creation practice. I've got some new art supplies that I wanted to play with, so doing a 30-day art challenge seemed like a good way to take them for a test drive and try new things.



I'm still thinking about what this will look like. Today I just started with a drawing/gouache painting of some peppers from the fridge. I think I'll just go with objects I'm finding around the house, as that's a low barrier to creating. I'll post as I go along and see what I end up with at the end of January.

It's snowy outside, but warm, cozy & colourful as I work on this custom painting in my studio.


I'm excited to show how this large scenic view is coming together!! As I paint ... the roadway leading into this autumn countryside is becoming more fully formed and realized... it's beginning to feel like I could just walk right into the painting (and go live in one of those white cottages surrounded by golden fields till this whole winter thing blows over lol). There's still a bit to go on this piece, but it's to the point where I can envision how it's going to turn out... it's gonna be wonderful!!!

I included the drawing that I created to work out the details prior to starting the painting


This is a fairly large piece, so I actually created a wall hanging system to work on it. My plan in 2026 is to create some larger paintings.

I'm excited to share 2 of my newly created paintings are at the Main Street Gallery in Bayfield. So wonderful to see my new ‘Park Pine’ painting included in the gallery's festive front window, alongside the awesome animal sculptures by the talented Mary Philpott!! @withinabrightwood


Also showing is my new painting of ‘Bayfield Town Hall’ (above). Many years ago my hubby and I almost chose this as our wedding venue ( unfortunately, the timing didn't work out). I love how the pine tree and shadow turned out. I played with the rhythms and lines to bring a joyful, upturned feel to the piece, and added some bright colors in the garden!

Working on some new painting!!! A few are custom pieces, a couple are for art galleries, and some are for the Boats & Birds painting collection that I started a while back but got put on the back burner.
Creating as a full-time artist requires lots of jumping around on the various projects as they become due. I have several paintings in the half-finished stage, a few that are done and waiting to be photographed and varnished, and some that are only ideas or sketches of ideas.
Often, I sit in my studio and look at the works in progress, thinking about what to change or add. I keep my acrylic paint palette moist in a ziplock bag so that whenever I see something I want to change, I can grab a brush and dip into paint to do it in the moment. Many times I go to my studio just to grab a piece of paper or retrieve a coffee cu,p and out of the corner of my eye, see a solution to a problem that I've been having in a painting. My ADHD brain drops everything, grabs a brush, and dives in...

Sharing my drawing for a custom painting in the works! I love it when folks reach out to me with ideas for paintings that they want to have in their home or give as a special gift. This one I'm working on is based on one of my previous paintings, but in this drawing, I've tweaked it to make it more personal to the collector and change the size ratio of the piece to make it larger and wider.


It's wonderful when one of my existing works is the point of departure for a custom piece... because that means a connection was felt with the original work and style, and it sparked a desire to have it become even more personal and specific to them.
The other upside of using existing pieces as the starting point is that it means we're both on the same page and have a similar idea of what the finished pieces will look like. I've created thousands (yes, thousands lol!) of paintings. So that means there's lots of source material to work from.

Happy Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada!! It always seems to sneak up on me. The weather has been so warm and wonderful, I keep thinking it's still summer.

A few of my fav Thanksgiving things… the smell of hot apple cider, autumn tree colors and big fluffy clouds, enjoying a cozy fire after dinner, connecting with loved ones, and of course thinking thankful thoughts.

I invite you to celebrate the harvest and practice gratitude even if it's not Thanksgiving where you are. After all, it's not just about one special day... it's about feeling thankful for every day.
