Every day, the garbage truck rolls through the city, unwavering in its duty picking up what no longer serves, carrying the weight of discarded remnants, and then, without hesitation, leaving it behind. It doesn’t complain, and it certainly doesn’t take the garbage home. It’s an invitation to practice emotional hygiene to process and leave behind the burdens we accumulate, rather than dragging them into our homes, relationships, and inner peace.

But in real life, many of us do carry emotional “garbage” home resentment from work, frustration from traffic, disappointment, or anxiety. It clings to us because unlike the garbage truck, we don’t always have a clear dump site. We lack rituals or habits to let go. We confuse experiencing hardship with needing to hold onto it.

But imagine if we mastered this discipline. What if we could learn to sort through our emotions with intention acknowledging the hard moments, but refusing to carry them forward? Instead of clinging to stress, we’d collect the small joys the warmth of a genuine smile, the kindness of a stranger, the victories (no matter how small) that remind us life is still good.

The garbage truck moves with purpose. It does the work, then it lets go. And maybe, just maybe, if we embraced its wisdom, we’d all feel a little lighter.
