The Gear Paradox: Why I stopped saying "Gear Doesn't Matter"

I secretly love it when friends ask me, "What camera should I buy?" or "Which Mac is best?" It’s a small thing, but being trusted with that decision means a lot to me.

For years, my default answer was the standard creative advice: "Gear doesn’t matter. Just use your phone."

And that’s 90% true. We’ve seen creators build empires using nothing but an iPhone and a ring light. If you have a story, you have enough.

But here is the truth I don’t say enough: Sometimes, gear does matter.

It matters when the tools get in your way. It matters when your computer freezes mid-render and kills your flow state. It matters when you miss a once-in-a-lifetime shot because your autofocus was too slow.

The "Best" gear isn't about megapixels or brand loyalty. It’s about removing friction.

For the Parent: The best gear is simply extra iCloud storage so you never get the "Storage Full" notification during a birthday party.

For the Hobbyist: It’s a camera that sparks joy, making you want to carry it.

For the Pro: It’s paying for reliability—dual card slots and batteries that last all day.

I’ll admit my bias: I’ve been a Mac user for a decade, not because of the logo, but because the M-series chips killed the friction in my workflow. I shoot Panasonic because it allows me to afford better lighting—which matters way more than the camera body.

My advice? Stop stressing over the specs. Identify where you feel the most friction in your creative process, and spend your money there.

👇 I want to hear from you: What was the first piece of gear you bought that actually felt like a "game changer" for your work?
