Wizkid announced as Detty December Fest 2026’s first headliner
Wizkid has been unveiled as the headline act for the new format of the highly anticipated 'Detty December' concert for 2026.
Nigerian music superstar Wizkid is set to return to Lagos this December, where he will headline the opening night of Detty December Fest 2026. The Grammy-winning Afrobeats star has been confirmed as the festival’s first headliner and will perform on December 18, officially launching the two-week celebration of music, culture, food, fashion and entertainment, which runs through December 30.

The festival is being produced once again by Livespot360, the entertainment company behind Cardi B’s historic performances in Nigeria and Ghana. Tickets for this year’s edition are already available through the festival’s official channels, with more headline acts expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Wizkid’s headline performance comes after a relatively low-key year for the singer. In January, he teamed up with Asake on their joint Real, Vol. 1 EP, before turning his attention to collaborations with artists from different musical backgrounds.

The singer previously spent much of 2025 on the road promoting his 2024 album Morayo, which peaked at No. 4 on Billboard’s World Albums chart. He has since released further collaborations, including “Dynamite” with Tyla and “Gimme Dat” with Ayra Starr. The latter earned a nomination for Best African Music Performance at the 2026 Grammy Awards.

The 2026 edition will also introduce a major change to the festival format with the addition of a second stage. Wizkid will headline the main Festival Stage on opening night, while the new Pulse Stage will spotlight emerging artists, fresh sounds and rising talents shaping the next generation of African music.

According to Livespot co-founder and chief creative officer Darey Art Alade, the new stage reflects the growing global influence of African music while creating more opportunities for younger artists. He said the platform would allow emerging performers to share the festival with established stars and contribute to the continued growth of Africa’s music ecosystem.

More headliners and performers are expected to be announced in the coming weeks as anticipation builds for Detty December Fest 2026 and Wizkid’s highly anticipated homecoming performance.

“U see ima tell u why Wizkid songs last forever. I take my time with this. I don’t make it for now. I make it for even after we’re long gone.”

The post immediately caught the attention of fans, with many interpreting it as a statement about the creative process behind his highly anticipated next album.

Wizkid followed it up with an even more direct update, writing:

“Having so much fun making this next one! I can’t wait to share #album”

The singer then appeared to tease a possible return to the stage or an upcoming visit to his fans, adding:

“And yes I’m finally going to see you soon! Nah fr I promise.”

He also shared a more cryptic message about the thoughts that come to him each morning, saying he wishes he could reveal more but suggested that current circumstances make that difficult.

The posts have reignited excitement around Wizkid’s next full-length project. The singer has previously teased his seventh studio album, with reports in June that he had announced the title as “SEXY.”

The new project would follow Morayo, Wizkid’s 2024 album dedicated to his late mother, and his 2026 collaborative EP REAL, Vol. 1 with Asake.

Nigerian music superstar Davido has opened up about how his long-standing competitive relationship with fellow Afrobeats icon Wizkid has changed over the years, saying his priorities are now centred on creating great music rather than fueling division.

Speaking in a recent interview with The FADER, the 33-year-old reflected on the evolution of Afrobeats and the healthy competition that once defined the genre’s biggest stars. While admitting that the competitive spirit still exists, Davido stressed that it no longer comes at the expense of unity.

“I’m 33 years old, I think [I’m] still competing. My head is just at making good music; whoever I make it with doesn’t matter to me. Division right now would make us weaker,” he said.

The comments come a decade after Davido previously spoke about the limited opportunities available for African artists on the global stage. According to the singer, the Afrobeats movement has grown significantly, creating room for multiple stars to thrive internationally rather than competing for a single spotlight.

Davido noted that a massive audience across Africa now backs the genre and has established its own festivals, award shows, and streaming presence, making collaboration and collective growth more important than rivalry.

For years, fans have debated the relationship between Davido and Wizkid, with comparisons and online fan wars becoming a defining feature of Afrobeats culture. However, Davido’s latest remarks suggest a more mature outlook, emphasising that unity among the genre’s leading artists will only strengthen Afrobeats’ global influence.

The singer is currently promoting his sixth studio album, Oriadé, released on July 31, where he explores themes of love, family, and legacy while collaborating with both established and emerging artists.

“Dai Dai,” the 2026 FIFA World Cup official song by Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, and Shakira, has topped the Billboard Global 200 chart for a fifth week and the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for an eighth week.

Billboard reported on its X handle on Tuesday that the song remained the world’s biggest song nearly a month after the tournament ended on July 19, when Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time.

Citing data from Luminate, the platform said “Dai Dai” recorded 44.1 million streams and 6,000 sales worldwide between August 7 and August 13.

It said, “Dai Dai, which first led the Global 200 in mid-July, drew 44.1 million streams (down 10% week over week) and sold 6,000 (down 9%) worldwide Aug. 7-13, according to Luminate.

“It holds atop Global Excl. U.S., where it first reigned at the beginning of July, with 37.8 million streams (down 10%) and 4,000 sold (down 8%) outside the U.S.”

In the U.S., Billboard said the song continued to gain across radio formats, rising to No. 3 as the Greatest Gainer on Rhythmic Airplay. It also topped the Latin Airplay chart for a week in late July.

Steve Lacy’s “Oh Yeah?”, also featured in the film, rose from No. 158 to No. 23 on the Global 200, while Post Malone and Swae Lee’s “Sunflower (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)” climbed from No. 53 to No. 29.

Billboard said the Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts rank songs based on streaming and sales activity from more than 200 territories, using data compiled by Luminate.

The Global 200 combines worldwide data, while the Global Excl. U.S. chart covers territories outside the United States.

Meanwhile, Best Dance has returned after a seven-year absence.

And the numbers make this decision even harder to understand:

📈 Afrobeats streams on Spotify grew 349× between 2014 and 2025.

🎧 The genre had already generated more than 15 BILLION Spotify streams by 2023.

🔥 Afrobeats listening in Nigeria has increased by 5,022% since 2021.

🎤 The number of Nigerian artists available on Spotify has grown by 158%.

🏆 Burna Boy now has 1 Grammy win and 13 nominations.

🏆 Tems has 2 Grammy wins and 8 nominations.

So African music is successful enough to compete in Best Latin, Best R&B and Best Collaboration—but apparently not important enough to keep its own VMA category?

Some fans will call this proof that Afrobeats has become truly global and no longer needs to be separated.

Others will see it as the music industry celebrating African artists while slowly erasing the identity of the sound that made them successful.

Burna Boy and Tems deserve every nomination—but the bigger question remains:

Is this GLOBAL CROSSOVER… or CULTURAL ERASURE?
