Why Your Casting Launder Temperature Drops So Fast?
There is a long-standing common misconception across the aluminum casting industry: the harder and heavier the refractory material, the better its performance and quality.
But our 30 years real production practice tells a completely different story when it comes to casting launder thermal performance:
Heavy & hard refractory: High thermal conductivity → absorbs heat fast → cools down rapidly
Light refractory: Low thermal conductivity → absorbs heat slow → maintains stable launder temperature
Standard casting temp into the well: 680~710°C (adjust per alloy & process)
Drop below this range? Your aluminum billet will develop rough crystallization, with clear feather-like crystals visible under a microscope — a completely unqualified product.

How Overlong Launders Waste Your Gas/Oil & Ruin Aluminum Billet Quality
Many aluminum plants unknowingly lose thousands in gas/oil cost yearly due to over-long launder designs.
A cooperating casting factory once adopted a 20-meters launder for their production line.
Industry data shows molten aluminum loses 1°C per meter of launder, leading to a total 20°C temperature drop over the full length.
To reach the required 730°C casting temperature, the furnace must heat aluminum to over 750°C.
Raising temperature past 730°C is hard and burns far more gas, hiking running costs.
Worse still, excessive furnace temperature triggers severe alloy overheating risks.
Low-melting alloy elements such as magnesium start oxidizing and burning off at around 500°C.
Mass magnesium loss caused by over-temperature will create internal defects and downgrade the final aluminum billet quality significantly.
Quick tip for plant optimization
Shortened launder layout in a reasonable range is one of the most cost-effective upgrades to cut fuel bills and stabilize billet metallurgical quality.
