Tonic RC

The recently announced upcoming Tamiya Nissan R91CP RC car re-release was not on my 2026 RC bingo card! It will be kit 47531. The one I have is kit 84264. I think they both share the same chassis but I’m not sure if there are any differences in parts. I think the box graphic layout might be different but both share mostly the same original hand painted artwork of the car itself (minus some sponsors). Will be curious if the sticker sheet will be the same since often times Tamiya doesn’t get all the re-release licensing from each manufacturer and changes things up as a result. I’m still not sure how I want to modify this car but I have a feeling I’ll add some sort of rear end work and more than likely interior and exterior lighting. It’ll also be likely this will be the very rare occasion that I actually do box art, as I was a HUGE fan of Nissan and their red, white, blue liveries of that era in both road racing and off road racing.

Bonus points if you can identify these two RC cars. Hint: they are both NOT current-day models! I bought these both new back in the day. I’m now changing these up to run in local low-key pop-up racing on tarmac. The one on the left (the dirty one) went from 4S using a 550 5.5-turn motor to now 2S using a 540 21.5-turn motor… THAT’LL be a change! 😅 The one on the right (the clean one) is missing the front CVD shafts (I had temporarily used it in 2WD short course carpet and now I can’t find those parts 🤦🏻‍♂️). I’m hoping I’ll get the clean one working, as it might be faster/nimbler since it’s quite lighter. But the dirty one has some good “brute force” behind it! 👊😅

Tamiya USA asked what was on the workbench this month. I have my M07R all ready to get built with hop-ups for carpet racing. I’m very tight on time this month though, so my fingers are crossed. Also trying to finish the edit for my RC10 B7R video. Non-RC-life is pulling me in all directions but when I do get to work on RC, it’s always therapeutic! 🙌

I scored this Tamiya TA03R from Facebook Marketplace today for $135. 🥳🎉 It needs a little cleaning and the rear suspension needs a little refreshing, but otherwise it’s super clean! I’m in love with all of the Novak stuff (those original booklets!). There’s a Yokomo Reedy Y brushed motor in it too and it looks really good, but I won’t know specs until I yank it out to clean it. It’s unlikely I’ll use the radio, batteries, and charger, but I might try it with the old stick radio first for nostalgia’s sake. The Porsche GT1 body is in really good shape too. I told the seller that it’s going to a good home… and yes it will!!! I’ll have to decide later if I carbon-fiber-up this thing or keep it simple with only fixes and clean up. 🤔

My original Trinity Switchblade 10 (front, circa 1997) and TRC Pro 10 (rear, circa 1988) as I raced them back in the day. They’re both in dire need of complete refresh, which I’m hoping to do in the next few months (I’ve got a slew of other cars in the queue ahead of them). The Trinity I especially miss driving.

This is my original Futaba Magnum PCM 1024 radio transmitter I used back in the day. It was an upgrade from my Airtronics XL2P. I thought this radio would single-handily turn me into an RC racing powerhouse. It did nothing of the sort, but it did reduce glitches (although never completely omitted like today’s 2.4GHz). Even though it didn’t turn me into an RC race legend, I still loved this radio and used it for many, many years until my next radio in line, the Airtronics M11x. I still love the look of this PCM 1024, as it was unique and didn’t resemble other radios before or after it. 👌
